Water does not waste its life arguing with the rock in its path. It meets the rock, understands its presence, then finds another way to continue its journey. That simple image stayed with me throughout Shannon Lee’s Be Water, My Friend: The Teachings of Bruce Lee. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Shannon herself, and somehow that made the experience more intimate. You are not simply hearing a woman explain the philosophy of Bruce Lee, the global martial arts icon, you are hearing a daughter reach into the thoughts of her father and gently hand them to you. Her voice is calm, reflective, sometimes tender, and the deeper you go, the more you realise that this is not really a book about fighting. It is about living. It is about the battles inside us, the identities we cling to, the expectations that imprison us, the pain we refuse to release, and the courage it takes to keep flowing when life refuses to follow our script. I finished it thinking about how much energy we spend trying to force life into the shape we have chosen for it. Maybe Bruce Lee was onto something profound. Maybe strength is not always about standing harder. Sometimes strength is knowing when to bend, when to flow, when to change direction, and when to crash through.

1. Stop fighting every rock, learn to flow around some of them.
Bruce Lee’s famous instruction to “be water” sounds simple until Shannon begins to unpack what water actually teaches us. Water adjusts. Pour it into something and it takes the shape available to it, yet it never stops being water. Put an obstacle before it and it does not sit there complaining about how unfair the obstacle is. It responds. That hit me because some of our deepest frustrations come from insisting that life must happen in one particular way. This job or nothing. This relationship or nothing. This plan or I have failed. This person must change before I can be happy. Meanwhile, life is screaming, move. Adapt. Flow. Shannon explains that being like water is not weakness or passive surrender. Water can be gentle enough to run through your fingers and powerful enough to reshape stone. Bruce himself arrived at this insight while struggling with his martial arts training, when his determination to overcome resistance by force was actually getting in his way. Sometimes the breakthrough is not more force. Sometimes it is flexibility. Some battles are exhausting us simply because we have decided that the only acceptable direction is straight ahead. Protect your peace, yes, but also protect your ability to move. Life may block one road without cancelling the destination.

2. Empty your cup, you cannot learn when you are already full of yourself.
This lesson humbled me. Bruce Lee believed deeply in approaching life with an open and questioning mind. Shannon repeatedly returns to the importance of releasing rigid assumptions, judgments, expectations and the desperate need to always be right. You cannot pour fresh water into a cup that is already overflowing. Sometimes what keeps us stuck is not what we do not know, it is what we are too certain we already know. We enter conversations already preparing our defence. We meet people and immediately put them into boxes. We encounter an idea and reject it because it threatens something we have believed for years. Then we wonder why we are not growing. Bruce was an obsessive learner, but what fascinates me is that learning for him was not simply collecting information. He absorbed ideas, examined them, tested them, kept what was useful and discarded what was not. That is a different kind of intelligence. It requires humility. You do not have to defend yesterday’s version of yourself forever. You are allowed to discover that you were wrong. You are allowed to unlearn. You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to outgrow what once made perfect sense to you. Sometimes the biggest plot twist in life is discovering that the wall standing between you and growth was built from your own certainty.

3. Stop trying to become somebody else, your real work is becoming fully yourself.
Bruce Lee could have spent his life copying the masters who came before him, but Shannon shows that his philosophy increasingly moved towards honest self expression. Learn from people, certainly, but do not disappear inside them. That lesson feels painfully relevant in a world where we are constantly watching somebody else’s success, somebody else’s marriage, body, career, business, ministry, lifestyle and highlight reel. Comparison can quietly turn your life into an imitation. You begin pursuing things you never truly wanted because everybody around you appears to want them. Bruce’s journey towards what became Jeet Kune Do reflected his refusal to become imprisoned by a single rigid system. He studied, questioned, experimented and searched for what genuinely worked for him. Shannon connects this to something much larger than martial arts, the journey towards our essential selves. That moved me. Maybe the goal of life is not to manufacture an impressive version of ourselves for public consumption. Maybe it is to remove everything false until the person underneath can finally breathe. Learn from people, admire them, celebrate them, but please do not abandon yourself trying to become them. The world already has them. Your assignment is to discover what only you can bring.

4. Do not wait until fear disappears, move with it.
Bruce Lee’s philosophy was intensely practical. Thought mattered, philosophy mattered, self knowledge mattered, but eventually something had to move. Shannon presents her father as someone who studied deeply and reflected constantly, yet translated what he discovered into action. That challenged me because sometimes we disguise fear as preparation. We tell ourselves we need one more course, one more meeting, one more confirmation, one more perfect plan, one more sign. Meanwhile, months become years. Bruce’s life reminds us that knowledge that never enters our behaviour remains incomplete. Water moves. It does not spend eternity analysing the riverbank. This does not mean reckless action. It means understanding that clarity often comes while moving, not before movement begins. You may never feel completely ready to write the book, start the business, leave what is destroying you, learn the skill, make the call or begin again. At some point, you have to move. And maybe somebody reading this needs that reminder today. Your life does not need another hundred imaginary rehearsals. Take the next honest step. It may be small, awkward and frightening, but movement has a way of revealing roads that standing still will never show you.

5. Life will break the shape you planned, but it does not have to destroy the person you are becoming.
This was where Shannon’s voice made the audiobook particularly powerful for me. Her discussion is not coming from someone who has only encountered philosophy in books. She lost her father when she was a little girl, then years later lost her brother, Brandon Lee, suddenly and tragically. When she speaks about navigating life, loss and uncertainty, the philosophy of water stops sounding like a clever motivational quote. It becomes survival. Life can change without permission. One phone call can divide your existence into before and after. Someone you thought would grow old beside you can suddenly become a memory. A dream you carried for years can collapse in one afternoon. And in moments like that, motivational slogans can feel painfully small. What Shannon draws from her father is not the promise that life will spare us from suffering, but an invitation to remain responsive to life even when its shape changes completely. Water does not retain one shape forever. Neither can we. Grief may change you. Failure may change you. Love may change you. Success may change you. Age will change you. The question is whether you can keep becoming without losing the deepest truth of who you are. That, for me, is the heartbeat of this book. Keep flowing. Keep learning. Keep becoming. Sometimes you will flow gently, sometimes you will crash, but whatever season you find yourself in, do not become stagnant. Be water, my friend.
