Carbohydrates have somehow ended up with a pretty terrible reputation!

But for endurance athletes, they’re not the enemy — they’re the preferred fuel source for hard training. They let you train harder for longer, support faster recovery, and help you function normally outside of training too.

A lot of the things people blame on carbs — weight gain, cravings, glucose spikes and “sugar crashes”, insulin resistance — are far more complicated than simply “carbs are bad”, and don't really apply in the sports nutrition and endurance context.

When athletes start avoiding carbs, especially around training, the bigger risk is actually under-fuelling.

Eating like an athlete means giving your body what it needs, when it needs it. And a lot of what you think you know about “healthy eating” depends on what you’re asking your body to do. Fuelling for endurance training is a whole new kettle of fish!

If performance and health matter to you, then carbs matter!

Last weekend we sweat tested some of the Your Running Pal athletes, and let's just say they are a salty bunch! 😅

Sweat testing is the fastest way to figure out your hydration needs, and comes with a tutorial on how to use the results to make a race nutrition and hydration plan. Book or request a test now! rhsn.co.nz/sweattesting

Low energy availability can be easier to fall into than people think!

You can be eating what seems like a normal amount, not deliberately dieting, and not even losing weight — but still not be eating enough for the training you’re doing. This is due to Energy Availability, which is the amount of energy left over for normal body functions after the energy cost of exercise has been accounted for.

Energy availability matters because if it’s low, the body starts making compromises elsewhere: recovery, hormones, immunity, bone health and adaptation.

On the other side of the coin, optimal energy availability is brilliant for performance — better recovery, optimal training quality, faster adaptation, and actually getting fitter from the work you’re doing.

Here is your September update of the Sweat Test Leaderboard! 💦

Everyone sweats differently — both how much fluid they lose and how much sodium they lose in their sweat. That means there isn’t one hydration plan (or one product) that works for everyone.

Sweat testing allows you to know exactly:
✅ How much sweat you lose per hour under given conditions
✅ How much sodium you lose in your sweat
✅ How much fluid and electrolytes you need to replace
✅ How to build a hydration plan around your own numbers

If you don’t know your numbers, you’re guessing. Sweat testing is the easiest way to take the guesswork out of hydration and get your strategy dialled in for training and race day.

Sweat testing is now available in:
📍 Hawke’s Bay with Kendall
📍 Alexandra with Hannah
📍 Palmerston North with Holly

Get in touch if you're outside one of these areas but you'd like to request a test, and we'll see what we can do.

Coming next:
📍 Wellington — October
📍 Central Auckland — TBC

From hitting the wall at 23km during training runs to finishing 50km still feeling strong 🙌

All we made were a few simple tweaks to their fuelling and hydration, and this was the message I got after race day. Woo hoo!

Athlete spotlight - Brandon

Brandon’s Park Run progression from his first 26+ minutes effort in November 2024 to 19:21 in June 2026 is a good reminder that meaningful performance gains come from consistently showing up!

Currently having completed 87 total Park Runs and with 2x sub-19 5k (not Park Run) results under his belt, he’s a masterclass in following the process and a fantastic reminder of where dedication can take you.

Progress is not linear, but the bigger picture is the progression that comes from putting the work in over time.

Consistency beats perfection and leads to PBs 🤙

The Alexandra Park Run community is stoked to see Brandon’s progress, and we look forward to seeing him continuing to hit new PBs!

What changes when your nutrition finally clicks?

This is what happens when you dial it in: consistency, clarity, confidence, and a simple, repeatable plan.

Training feels completely different - stacking days, weeks and months becomes possible; you have more consistent energy and better recovery; no more nausea or GI issues; no more over-thinking; less confusion.

This is what awaits when you finally dial in your fuelling.

For those who don’t know, my good friend Teresa and I recently developed Breaking Limits: BYU High-Performance Programme — fully integrated coaching specifically for backyard ultras.

Teresa is a well-loved and respected strength and running coach based here in Alexandra, and I use my experience as a sports nutritionist working with some of NZ’s best BYU athletes to share what I’ve learnt and use nutrition to to keep you lapping for longer.

The results from our first intake were pretty fricken exciting! All six athletes who completed the programme cracked 100km. One athlete even went from 7 laps last year to 22 laps this year — which is a fairly decent day out by anyone’s standards!

But it wasn’t just about the numbers: they arrived at the start line well-prepared, knew what they needed to do, had friendly faces there to welcome them and settle the nerves, and all came away with genuinely great race experiences (and immediately entered their next BYUs).

That’s what Breaking Limits is about: helping you get more out of yourself by covering all four pillars of BYU success in one place -

Nutrition
Training and strength
Mindset
Race planning

Our next intake starting 11th July is set for anyone targeting River Run BYU, Satellite World Champs and Arrowtown BYU. So, if you’re entered in one of these races and want to meet your full potential AND enjoy the experience, you honestly should take a look at Breaking Limits - rhsn.co.nz/breakinglimits

Regardless, check out "This is Bulls**t — The Story of the Alexandra Airport Carousel BYU", now out on YouTube! Warning: it may make entering a backyard ultra seem like a good idea.
