Shane Anderson was metres from finishing his 3200km walk when someone blocked his path.

The eve of the final leg.

Tomorrow, a six-month hikoi that began in Bluff reaches its final destination at Cape Reinga.

If you’d like to be part of the final leg, we’ll be gathering at the Tapotupotu and State Highway 1 junction at 9:30am, before beginning the walk toward the Cape.

What began as a walk to clear my mind, find clarity, and reconnect with purpose has grown into something far greater than myself.

I carry with me everything this journey has taught me — the people, the whenua, the stories, the challenges, the healing, and the moments that have shaped the path behind me.

Tomorrow is not simply an ending. It is a marker between what has been, what is, and what is yet to come.

The hikoi may finish at Cape Reinga, but the kaupapa does not.

The real work begins when this hikoi ends.

Every week, No Duff takes calls from veterans and serving personnel who are struggling to get the support they have already earned. Injuries acknowledged but untreated. Claims that stall. Families carrying the load while the system takes its time.

Men like Pup Johnson, an NZSAS veteran whose service-related injuries Veterans' Affairs New Zealand has already accepted, and who is still waiting on an effective treatment pathway 18 months after his application was accepted.

Veterans in crisis dealing with the most dysfunctional veterans support sector in the Western world, and forced to rely on an organisation of volunteers with little resource for help.

That is the context in which we received a request from Tim Costley MP asking the No Duff Charitable Trust to publicly support his member's bill for a new Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief Medal.

We have replied, and we are publishing that reply here.

It is not a no.

It is a request that work to improve recognition for service be matched by work to overhaul and restructure an unquestionably dysfunctional veterans support sector so that it reliably provides timely and effective support for the people whose service to this country has already cost them something.
