You might recognise our very own Local Health GP, Dr Amy Ikenasio, featured in issues of The Post and Feilding First recently.

Dr Amy talks about the team effort behind getting a patient the care they need, and how her experience as a flying doctor in remote South Australia has helped her apply that knowledge here in the Manawatū.

Did you know your local GP practice offers more than just doctor appointments?

Alongside our GPs, nurse practitioners and nurses, our teams work closely with paramedics, physiotherapists, health coaches, and district and public health nurses. Plus they can connect you to services like blood tests, x-ray, ultrasound and pharmacy.

Our job is to make sure you’re receiving the right care for your needs and that’s why we’re more than a doctor’s clinic, we’re a team of specialised clinical staff. Together, we’re here to help you.

Got plans this Saturday 3 October? We do!

After a wonderful event in 2025 that saw over 1,000 people through the doors, the Rainbow Fair is BACK - bigger, brighter, and more fabulous than ever.

We’re thrilled to again sponsor this Fair in partnership with Palmy Drag Fest, who are bringing the Manawatū community together to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and belonging. By supporting this event, we want to help make Manawatū a place where everyone feels welcome and cared for.

Healthcare is for every body. At this event you can expect local stalls & makers, community groups, performances & entertainment, food, and fun, all in a safe and welcoming space for everyone.

Join us 10am–2pm at the Palmerston North Conference and Function Centre.

If you haven't visited your general practice for a while, things may look a little different.

Perhaps your first appointment is with a nurse practitioner, practice nurse, paramedic or another clinical team member rather than your usual GP.

It might not even be in person - a triage phone call, or a message through our online patient portal.

Our teams are built so you see the right person for your needs, as quickly as possible. If your GP's expertise is needed, we make sure that happens too.

It might feel unfamiliar if you haven’t needed to seek health care for a while, but our goal hasn't changed - excellent care, from people you can trust.

Great news - the flu vaccine is now funded for pēpē and tamariki aged from 6 months old right up until their 5th birthday!

It's not too late to get immunised this year. Flu is spreading at very high rates across Aotearoa, and the vaccine protects against 4 different strains.

If your child is under 4 and getting the flu vaccine for the first time, they'll need two doses, 4 weeks apart, for the best protection.

The flu vaccine can be given alongside their normal childhood immunisations - just ask the nurse about it at their 12 month, 15 month or 4 year immunisation visit.

Give our team a call or use the Local Health App to book in.

Flu season is hitting hard this year, and here's something worth knowing: you're often most contagious before you feel your worst, so "soldiering on" at work, school or daycare can increase the risk of spreading it.

Feeling unwell? If you can, take a day to rest up in case you're about to go downhill. If you're sick, keep your fluids up, stay home and use paracetamol or ibuprofen for aches and fever.

Resting at home is the best treatment, as antibiotics don't work on viruses. However, do reach out for help if you or your child have difficulty breathing, chest pain, a high fever that won't come down, a severe headache or stiff neck, or blue or purple lips/skin. You can call Healthline free, 24/7, on 0800 611 116, and always call 111 in an emergency.

Haven't had your flu vaccine yet? It's not too late, and it's still a helpful protection, especially if you're older, pregnant, or living with someone who has an ongoing health condition.

Calling all GPs looking for a Local Health lifestyle!

Our Local Health practices across the region are looking for more doctors.

GPs at any stage in their career are welcome to get in touch - registrars, people a few years in, or someone more senior thinking about what their next chapter looks like.

If you or someone you know is looking for a rewarding role with a team that values collaboration, wellbeing, and high-quality care, we’d love to connect.

Managing your health, and the health of your whānau, is not always straightforward.

Sometimes what's needed isn't just a prescription or a referral, but someone to walk alongside you, help connect you with the right support, and make sure nothing gets missed along the way.

That's the thinking behind the new Local Health Care Coordination service, He Pito Oranga.

Our Care Coordinators, Alicia and Grace work closely with patients and whānau who are navigating complex health and social challenges. They join the dots between health, social services, and community support so that people don't have to figure it all out alone.

If you want to learn more about this, chat to our team on 06 888 7483 or email [email protected]
