Direct from our sleep physician: avoid drinking when you can, but if you’d like to partake on social occasions, keep it to only a couple nights a month to avoid significant impact on your sleep. 😴

Patients often ask our specialists how much alcohol can be consumed before it starts to impact their quality of sleep.

The short answer? Any amount of alcohol can have a negative impact on sleep (and it’s best avoided altogether if you’re actively trying to improve your sleep!). However, our guiding ethos at Auckland Sleep is that the best lifestyle changes you can make are the ones that feel sustainable long-term, and sometimes, a celebration calls for a glass of something bubbly!

If you want to see noticeable improvements in your overall sleep quality but want to enjoy a drink every now and then as part of a balanced life, use the Triple 2 Rule to moderate the impact of occasional alcohol consumption on your sleep rhythms:
- Up to 2 standard drinks per occasion.
- Up to 2 days in a month.
- Don’t drink 2 days in a row.

If you’re experiencing severe sleep disruptions or fatigue, stick to the mocktails and get in touch with our team to find out how we can help get your sleep back on track.

October often feels like the start of good weather and the tipping point into the silly summer season, so we are taking the month to explore how alcohol impacts your sleep. Stay tuned as we interview our sleep specialists across the team about the various links between alcohol and sleep, and learn the key takeaways to enjoy a festive summer (without the sleeplessness!).

Auckland Sleep founder and ENT surgeon, Dr Sumit Samant, kicks off the series with a ‘Fact or Fiction’ video about the links between alcohol and sleep, particularly how drinking impacts the upper airway, leading to possible increased snoring or sleep apnoea.

Sleep science can be complicated, but sometimes there are simple answers to the most frequent questions we hear. “Will using a CPAP machine stop my snoring?” Our Sleep Physiologist, Wilson Lai, gives a clear answer.

Auckland Sleep’s CPAP trials are a popular way patients can experiment with using a CPAP machine and decide if it works for them (and their bed partner) before committing.

Get in touch to organise a sleep study and see if CPAP is the right choice for you.

Have you ever heard of a tactical nap? Not all naps are created equal but a well-timed app can help you recharge and focus. Think of it as a strategic reset. The key? Keep it short, intentional and early enough that it doesn’t interfere with your nights rest. Tell us how you feel about a tactical nap 😴

If you’ve been considering a custom mandibular advancement splint for sleep apnoea (more commonly referred to as a “snoring mouth guard”), you’re probably wondering if it’s worth making such a significant investment. Can an over-the-counter mouth guard do the same thing? Our in-house sleep dentist, Dr Alex Wu, discusses the benefits of custom splints in this video. The long-term value is in sustainable comfort - the splint is designed in an extremely accurate slim profile for your exact mouth shape, reducing snoring and sleep apnoea without the associated discomfort of a clunky mouth guard. Auckland Sleep also provides ongoing support and adjustments to your device to ensure the fit remains as comfortable on Day 1 as Day 1000. If you’re curious to find out if a splint can make a real difference for your snoring and sleep apnoea, book in for an assessment today with Auckland Sleep. Find the registration form for new patients on our website.

The whole Auckland Sleep team knows the science behind napping, but what does everyone *actually* do on their weekend, if given the chance to take a little bonus snooze?!

Brrrrr, it’s cold outside! It’s time to crank the heaters, but what IS the best room temperature for sleeping? The ideal range varies depending on how old you are - with young kids and seniors preferring a warmer bedroom - so if you’ve got three generations under one roof, your best bet is 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit, for our Northern Hemisphere friends). Set the thermostat and sleep tight tonight.
