Service Spotlight: Paediatric Dental

Dental pain can affect everything from eating and sleeping to learning and simply getting through the day.

Getting treatment sooner can make all the difference, but demand for paediatric dental care remains high. Over the past 12 months, 1,232 tamariki received urgent dental treatment on our Mobile Surgical Unit, representing 75.5% of all patients treated.

To help tackle growing waitlists, weโ€™ve been running weekend paediatric dental lists in Rangiora and Wฤnaka, helping more tamariki get the treatment they need, sooner.

With nearly 30 yearsโ€™ experience as a Dental Public Health Specialist, our Dental Lead Tim MacKay knows the difference timely care can make: โ€œBringing care closer to home reduces travel and disruption for families while relieving pain and infection, helping children return to eating, sleeping and learning without discomfort.โ€

Looking ahead, Tim would like to see oral health more closely integrated with preschool health, helping tamariki access the right care earlier and closer to home.

The Mobile Surgical Unit can arrive in a remote community, open its doors, and within hours be delivering specialist healthcare that might otherwise require patients to travel hundreds of kilometres.

For five weeks, fifth-year medical student Faith DeCourcy stepped into the rhythm of rural healthcare, travelling with the surgical unit and seeing firsthand how healthcare can be transformed when services meet people where they are.

It wasn't long before Faith understood why so many clinicians are drawn to rural health.

"Working rurally feels different. Thereโ€™s less hierarchy, everyone is focused on helping their community, and the impact you have on peopleโ€™s lives feels very real."

๐Ÿ† ๐—ช๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ป!

RESCyou brings high-level, hands-on emergency training directly to rural communities, tailored to local teams, needs and resources. For more than a decade, it has been helping rural clinicians prepare for the moments when every decision matters and specialist support is hours away.

And the impact is real. Clinicians have reported using their RESCyou training to save lives in remote hospitals, manage severe asthma when retrieval was impossible, and introduce new protocols for burns and agitation management.

Weโ€™re thrilled to win, but even prouder of what this award represents: stronger rural emergency capability, more confident local clinicians and better access to emergency care for rural communities.

Mental Health Awareness Week: Belonging Matters

When we create opportunities for people to belong, our communities and wellbeing grow stronger.

Ko au ko koe, ko koe ko au | I am you, and you are me.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we encourage everyone to reflect on the importance of mental wellbeing in our workplaces, communities, and everyday lives. Creating environments where people feel safe to talk, seek support, and support others is something we all have a role in.

This week is a reminder to pause and check in with ourselves and those around us. Let's make time for:
โœ… Connection
โœ… Kindness
โœ… Rest
โœ… Support

Let's continue the conversation, strengthen our sense of belonging, and encourage people to reach out when they need support.

For two decades, My Health Hub has supported health professionals across Aotearoa with nearly 159,000 hours of learning, helping build skills, confidence, and better outcomes for patients, whฤnau, and communities.

Weโ€™re incredibly proud of what this programme has achieved, and we continue to be inspired by the thousands of health professionals who have invested in their own growth so they can better serve others. From remote communities to busy rural clinics, you have joined webinars, attended workshops, and shared knowledge with a common goal: delivering the best possible care.

Behind every learning opportunity is the potential to improve a patient experience, strengthen a clinical service, or make a positive difference in someone's health journey. That's why My Health Hub exists and why, after 20 years and nearly 159,000 hours of learning, we're still as committed as ever to supporting the people who care for our communities.

Thank you to the health professionals, presenters, partner organisations, Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, and the My Health Hub team who have helped make My Health Hub what it is today. The impact of this programme extends far beyond the learning itself, reaching patients, whฤnau, and communities across Aotearoa every day.

We Got Wiggy for Wig Wednesday!

By taking part in Wig Wednesday for Child Cancer Foundation, we joined schools, organisations, and community groups across Aotearoa to raise awareness and stand alongside tamariki with cancer.

Every dollar raised helps provide practical, emotional and financial support to tamariki and whฤnau as they navigate the challenges of childhood cancer, ensuring they don't have to face the journey alone.

There's still time to show your support.๐Ÿ’›
