This is exactly what I talk to my clients about. Enjoy the movement that motivates you to move more.
I don’t care if you hate running. Don’t run.
You don’t have to force yourself through an exercise you dread just because someone told you it’s the “best” way to stay fit.
Maybe you like walking. Maybe you enjoy hiking. Perhaps cycling doesn’t even feel like exercise to you. Maybe it’s dancing, swimming, pickleball, gardening, or lifting weights with a friend. There is no special reward waiting for the person who suffers through the exercise they hate most.
I do believe there is value in occasionally training the brain for adversity. Life will ask difficult things of us, and learning to tolerate discomfort can be useful. But that doesn’t mean every workout needs to feel like punishment.
Some physical capacities are worth protecting as we age—strength, aerobic fitness, balance, and power. But there are many ways to build them.
The best exercise is often the one that creates the least friction between you and actually doing it.
So experiment. Try different things. Pay attention to what makes you feel better, what you enjoy, and what you can realistically keep doing.
