It is that time of year again – Spring has Sprung! And so have all of the pollens that accompany it causing discomfort for so many people. ?We asked Dunedin Naturopath Sarah Campbell-MacKenzie about what herbs she grows at that help combat hayfever.

Hayfever isn’t just a seasonal issue – blocked or inflamed sinus passages can be a year-round issue for some people. So here is some information on a few garden herbs that you can grow easily to support your breathing discomfort.

Horseradish – has a high sulphur content so works by opening up the nasal passages which helps to clear out mucus. Horseradish is high in Vitamin C and is a strong antioxidant. Its compounds reduce inflammation and its oils have natural antibacterials properties.
This is very easy to grow (perhaps too easy) so may need to be contained in pots in your garden.

Nettle Leaf – the humble nettle is a natural antihistamine which works by blocking the body’s histamine reactions. Its leaves are prickly on the skin but don’t underestimate their benefits! Packed with vitamin A, C, and K, along with essential minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. Once dried or heated, the leaves lose their sting.

Golden Rod is an anti-catarrhal, which helps the body dry up excess mucus! Golden Rod contains quercetin and has very high antioxidant properties. It also has the most beautiful yellow flower head.

Garlic is another antihistamine containing quercetin. It is a natural decongestant with immune and anti-inflammatory properties.

Elderflower has astringent qualities that help to dry out nasal passages. And are high in antioxidants which slows the body’s reaction to allergens.

Feverfew has antiallergy properties which stabilise mast cells thus preventing the release of an inflammatory response.
