Most people know to keep an eye on their moles, but not everyone knows what they're actually looking for.

The ABCDE rule is a simple place to start:

A – Asymmetry: one half doesn't match the other
B – Border: edges that are uneven, notched or blurry
C – Colour: more than one shade, or a colour that's changed
D – Diameter: larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil top)
E – Evolving: anything changing in size, shape or colour

Any one of these is worth a second look. More than one, and it's time to book a check.

October is Melanoma Awareness Month, and it lands right as UV levels across NZ start climbing fast.

Melanoma is one of the more serious skin cancers, but it's also one of the most treatable when it's caught early.

Spring is when a lot of us head back outdoors without thinking about sun protection the way we do in summer. That gap is exactly when habits slip.

If it's been a while since your last skin check, let this month be your nudge to get one booked.

For many outdoor workers, finding time for a skin check isn't always easy.

That's why we've spent the last seven years taking skin health directly to New Zealand workplaces.

By bringing experienced nurses, education, and screening to where people already are, we're making prevention more accessible, more practical, and more likely to happen.

Because prevention works best when it fits into everyday life, not when it becomes another appointment to organise.

Big numbers are easy to scroll past. But every one of them represents someone.

A worker who finally booked a skin check.
A suspicious spot caught early.
A conversation that travelled home to family.
A workplace that decided prevention was worth investing in.

Over the past seven years, those moments have added up to thousands of opportunities to detect skin cancer earlier and help New Zealanders better protect their skin.

That's why we keep showing up.

Every workplace visit can include far more than screening.

✔ Practical UV education
✔ Toolbox talks
✔ Workplace sunscreen stations
✔ Personal skin health advice
✔ Behaviour change that lasts beyond the day

Because preventing skin cancer isn't about one appointment.

It's about creating healthier habits that workers take with them every day.

Most people don't regret getting a skin check.

They regret putting it off. Early detection often means simpler treatment, better outcomes and greater peace of mind.

If you've been meaning to book one, consider this your reminder.

When melanoma is detected early, the five-year survival rate is over 99%. Once it spreads, those odds drop significantly.

That's why regular skin checks matter. Knowing what's normal for your skin and acting early if something changes could save your life.

Early detection isn't just important. It's everything.

☀️ Great guest speaker at our volunteers’ meeting this week!

We were delighted to welcome Sara Briant from Skin Aware, who shared some really useful advice on skin cancer prevention - from choosing the right sunscreen, to knowing what to look for on our skin and how to stay sun-safe all year round.

Such a timely and valuable session as we head into a hot summer ahead! 🌞🧴

Thanks, Sara, for helping us all stay informed and sun-safe. 💛
