Why are strict diets & killer exercise plans so hard to stick to?
1. They ask you to change everything all at once.
Shopping, cooking, eating and exercise.
2. They leave little room for real life.
Birthdays, meals out and tired evenings are part of life. A plan that only works when everything goes perfectly is difficult to maintain.
3. They can turn one slip into giving up.
When foods are labelled “forbidden”, eating one biscuit can feel like breaking the whole diet. “I’ve blown it” becomes “I may as well keep eating”.
4. They demand effort without always teaching skills.
Being told to “try harder” doesn’t teach you how to handle cravings, plan an easy dinner or get back on track after a difficult day.
If you are looking at starting any weight loss program, ask yourself: “Could I still follow this plan during a busy, imperfect week?”
If the answer is “no” then it may save you money, effort and disappointment to choose not to continue with the plan. Instead look for something that you can do on a day-to-day basis.
Research suggests that plans that focus on nutrition education, mindset skills, accountability and sensible exercise are the most successful in the long term.
These plans are not as sexy as the quick fix diet that promises you will lose things like 20kg in two weeks. But they work better in the long term. Because the aim is to lose fat while protecting muscle and bone and our metabolism. Especially if we have been through menopause.
Very restrictive diets are not only hard to stick to, but they are well known for reducing our muscle and our bone density, and slowing our metabolism. None of which is healthy. And it makes it more difficult to keep the weight off if we reach goal.
