HYPNOTHERAPY — LET’S BUST A FEW MYTHS
There’s still a lot of misunderstanding around hypnotherapy. So let’s separate fact from fiction.
❌ “You’re unconscious or asleep.”
FACT: You remain aware and can hear and respond. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and increased responsiveness to suggestion.
❌ “The therapist controls your mind.”
FACT: You remain an active participant. You don’t lose control or have to accept suggestions that go against your values.
❌ “It’s just relaxation.”
FACT: Relaxation can be part of it, but therapeutic hypnosis also works with focused attention, suggestion, thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
❌ MYTH: “It’s just woo-woo.”
FACT: Hypnosis has been studied scientifically for decades. Research supports potential benefits for some applications, including pain management and certain gastrointestinal conditions, while evidence for other uses is still developing or mixed.
❌ MYTH: “Hypnotherapy works for absolutely everything.”
FACT: This is an important one. Hypnotherapy isn’t a magic cure — and good practitioners shouldn’t claim that it is. The evidence varies depending on the problem being treated, the person and the therapeutic approach.
So what is hypnotherapy really about?
For me, it’s about creating a state where you can slow down, focus your attention and become more open to useful suggestions and new ways of thinking.
Your brain is constantly learning from repetition, experience and expectation.
Hypnotherapy can be one tool to help you begin changing the patterns that may no longer be serving you.
Not mind control.
Not magic.
Not evil or against god
Not being asleep.
It’s a therapeutic tool that can help you work with patterns of thought, behaviour and belief — and create space for change.
✨ Change your mindset. Change your life.
