This is why we started True Proactive ❤️

Dr Clive recently received this message from someone who used our FIT screening service because they were outside the age range for publicly funded bowel screening.

Following their FIT test, they went on to have a colonoscopy, where eight polyps were removed and sent to the laboratory for testing.
They've kindly given us permission to share their message anonymously.

Our purpose has always been to make proactive bowel cancer screening more accessible to New Zealanders, including those who aren't yet eligible for the National Bowel Screening Programme.

Messages like this mean so much to our small, tight-knit team. Thank you for trusting us and letting us share your story.

Why are FIT tests such an important part of bowel cancer screening?

A new article from University of Utah Health explains how simple at-home FIT testing can help remove some of the barriers that stop people from getting screened.

No special preparation, no appointment needed to collect your sample, and the test can detect hidden blood in your stool that may be an early sign of bowel cancer or polyps.

We've also been getting quite a few questions about FIT tests lately, so we've answered some of them in the slides. Swipe through to learn more.

True Proactive Health's purpose is to make proactive screening more accessible to New Zealanders.

Evidence continues to build around the value of bowel cancer screening.

A large scale study concluded that organised FIT based screening was associated with substantial and sustained reductions in bowel cancer mortality, supporting its long term role as a public health strategy.

Research like this helps strengthen the evidence behind the importance of screening and early detection, and why we are trying to get our message out to everyone in New Zealand outside of the National Screening Programme eligibility.

We use FIT test technology, which is the same as the government programme. FIT testing uses antibodies that detect human haemoglobin only. This makes it more specific to bleeding from the bowel. FIT usually requires just one sample and has no dietary restrictions. The FIT test can also give quantitative numbers, ie not just a positive or negative, making it more accurate.
A positive FIT means blood was detected above a set threshold. It does not diagnose cancer. Further investigation such as colonoscopy is needed.

Antony speaks openly about what he’s going through and what matters most to him now…

His purpose is to raise awareness of bowel cancer and hopefully prevent someone else from going through what he is experiencing.

Antony, thank you for continuing to share your story, even on the hardest days.

A heartfelt thank you to Lisa Owen and Radio New Zealand for giving Antony the opportunity to share his experience and help his message reach more New Zealanders.

Please help us get Antony’s message out there. Let’s get on top of bowel cancer in New Zealand.

Share his story with someone you care about.

Would earlier bowel cancer screening have made a difference for Antony?
This is a difficult question for someone now living with terminal bowel cancer.

Speaking with RNZ Lisa Owen, Antony discusses the importance of being aware of bowel cancer and the screening options available, including True Proactive.

We want more New Zealanders to have access to proactive screening, including those who fall outside the National Bowel Screening Programme.

If you’re eligible for free screening, please take part. If you’re not eligible and want to screen proactively, you can learn more about FIT testing through True Proactive.

Share Antony’s story, and let it help your friends and family 🙏🫶

Lowering the age for free bowel cancer screening in New Zealand is a step in the right direction, but for Antony Oliver, the concern is how long it’s taking.

New Zealanders younger than the screening age are still being diagnosed with bowel cancer, and Antony knows firsthand how devastating that can be.

In this interview, recorded on 6 October 2026, Antony speaks with Lisa Owen on RNZ Checkpoint about the screening age and why more needs to be done.

Please note: Any references to “today” in the interview refer to 6 October 2026.

We’ll be sharing three parts of Antony’s conversation, helping him get his message out to more New Zealanders! 🙏

A heart feel thank you to Lisa Owen and the team at RNZ Checkpoint for giving Antony the opportunity to share his story and help raise awareness of bowel cancer.
