Health New Zealand lifts public health warning for Napier and Hastings
Health New Zealand has this morning lifted its public health warning for Napier and Hastings following confirmation that smoke from the Waiouru fire has largely diminished.
The warning was issued last night as a precaution, based on modelling that predicted potentially high levels of smoke pollution expected into Napier and Hastings this morning.

PUBLIC HEALTH WARNING ISSUED AS SMOKE FROM WAIOURU FIRE EXPECTED TO AFFECT NAPIER AND HASTINGS
The National Public Health Service in Hawke’s Bay has issued a public health warning for Napier and Hastings residents, with smoke from the Waiouru fire expected to affect air quality tomorrow (Wednesday 28 October).
Medical Officer of Health Dr Nick Jones says air quality modelling provided by Fire and Emergency New Zealand predicts potentially medium to high levels of smoke pollution from early morning in Napier, with conditions expected to improve across Napier and Hastings throughout the day.
People who are particularly sensitive to smoke, including those with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women, young children and older people may experience symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.

Dr Jones says exposure to smoke can worsen pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and heart disease.
“Residents should be aware that smoke may affect air quality and are advised to keep windows and doors closed and limit outdoor physical activity while smoky conditions persist.”
What to do when it’s smoky outside:
If you see or smell smoke outside, you should stay inside if it’s safe to do so.
Remember to:
• Keep your windows and doors shut
• Switch your air conditioning to ‘recirculate’
• Air out your house when the smoke clears
• Look out for children, older people, and others at risk
• Keep pets inside with clean water and food. Keep pets’ bedding inside if possible.
