Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day 🤍

A day to remember the little lives that were here, however briefly, and the hopes, dreams and love that surrounded them.

For those who have experienced loss, whether recently or many years ago, we see you.

There is no timeline for grief, no right way to feel, and no need to explain what your loss means to you.

Today, we remember the babies who are deeply loved and dearly missed, and hold their families gently in our thoughts.

You are not alone 💙🩷🤍

I’m a big believer in the “boring” stuff.

Nourishing food. Moving your body. Getting enough sleep. Building strength. Getting outside. All the things we already know are good for us.

But I don’t think they need to look the same for everyone - or be particularly boring.

For me, it’s about finding ways to make the basics work around my actual life.

Because there’s family. There’s work. There’s running a business. There are a million other things that need my attention.

And I actually want to enjoy my life too!

So yes, I eat cake for breakfast. 🎂
I put collagen or creatine in my coffee. ☕
I garden. 🌱
I dance. 💃
I do Pilates and yoga.

I’m not trying to optimise every minute of my day or do everything perfectly. And these haven’t happened to appear overnight.

I’m just finding the things that work for me and that I actually enjoy enough to keep doing.

Because looking after your health needs to fit into your life, not become your whole life.

The basics matter. But finding your version of them - the version you actually enjoy and can keep doing - matters too 🤍

Hormonal health is about so much more than oestrogen.

Your hormones are part of a much bigger picture. They are influenced by your reproductive health, thyroid, metabolic health, nutrition, sleep, movement, stress and overall wellbeing.

And not every symptom is hormonal.

Good hormonal healthcare isn’t about chasing the “perfect” hormone level or taking a handful of supplements to “balance” your hormones. It’s about understanding the whole picture, working out what matters for you, and making meaningful and informed decisions about your health.

At the end of the day, you really can’t supplement your way out of poor sleep, high stress, no movement and a diet that isn’t nourishing.

The “boring stuff” is honestly the most powerful. Getting the foundations of sleep, nutrition, stress management, and movement right, really matters 🤍

I thought it was probably time you got to know the person behind Balance Women’s Health a little better… not just the healthcare that I provide.

I’m a mum, a Nurse Practitioner, a business owner, a lifelong learner… and someone who is still figuring out the balance of work, family, health and life.

I take the clinical side of what I do seriously, but I also believe good healthcare should feel human, personal and grounded in real life so getting to know you is just as important as the evidence based care I provide.

Ultimately, I’m here because I love what I do, I care about people’s health, and genuinely want to help people feel more confident and supported in reaching their own health goals - in a realistic and individualised way.

So, that’s a little more about me. Thanks for being here 🤍

When we think about fertility, we often focus on ovulation, menstrual cycles, hormones, egg quality or s***m health.

And these things matter.

But they don’t exist in isolation.

Your fertility is influenced by the health of your whole body. Things like:

🌿 Metabolic health
🧠 Stress and mental wellbeing
😴 Sleep
🥗 Nutrition and nutrient status
🏃‍♀️ Movement and exercise
🩸 Blood sugar and insulin regulation
🦋 Thyroid function
💊 Medications and supplements
🌱 Environmental and lifestyle exposures

These are all pieces of the bigger picture. This is why I believe preparing for pregnancy can be about so much more than simply trying to conceive.

It’s an opportunity to invest in your health before you become a parent. The goal isn’t just to create the conditions for conception. It’s to build strong foundations for healthy parents, a healthy pregnancy and a healthy family.

The health you invest in today doesn’t stop mattering when you see those two lines on a pregnancy test. It becomes part of the foundation you carry into pregnancy, parenthood and the years beyond 🤍

When we talk about fertility, so much of the focus naturally falls on the female aspects of ovulation, hormones, cycles and egg health. It is often the female partner making appointments, doing the blood tests, going for scans and other investigations.

Meanwhile the male partner’s health is underestimated, under-investigated and undertreated. Ignoring male reproductive health places a greater responsibility on females, and often limits the overall chances of conception.

But there are often two people involved in conception, and s***m health matters too. Fertility is a team sport!

In fact, male factors contribute to fertility challenges in a significant proportion of couples. And s***m health isn’t simply about how well they swim.

We can look at things like:
✨ S***m count
✨ Motility- how well s***m move
✨ Morphology - s***m shape and structure
✨ Hormonal and metabolic health
✨ Nutrition and nutrient status
✨ Sleep, stress and exercise
✨ Medications, alcohol, smoking and other environmental exposures

Importantly, s***m health can change. S***m take around 2-3 months to develop, which means the health and lifestyle choices made today can influence the s***m that are available in the months ahead.

This is why I wanted the Balance Fertility Pathway to be genuinely inclusive. It isn’t simply a fertility pathway for women.

When appropriate, we also assess the male partner’s health, identify factors that may be influencing fertility, and create practical, personalised recommendations to support s***m health and overall wellbeing.

Preparing for pregnancy isn’t just about making a baby. It’s about creating the healthiest possible foundation for both people embarking on that journey. If you’re thinking about starting a family, whether you’re just beginning to think about it, have been trying for a while, or simply want to optimise your health first - we take an inclusive whole-person approach to both partners 🌱

✨ Something very special has been in the works… ✨

I’ve been quietly working behind the scenes to create something I’m really excited to share with you!

Introducing the Balance Fertility Pathway 🌸

A personalised and inclusive approach to fertility that looks at whole-person health - not simply making a baby.

We spend weeks, months, sometimes years, researching and planning the big things in life, like a wedding or an overseas trip.
We compare options, make lists, seek advice and try to make sure everything is just right.
Yet one of the biggest life transitions we may ever experience, preparing to have a baby, is either given far less thought, or becomes extremely overwhelming or confusing.

The Balance Fertility Pathway is designed to support you wherever you are on your fertility journey:

🌿 Understanding your fertility - learning about your fertility and the sympto-thermal method, whether your goal is to conceive or avoid conception.

🌿 Planning for pregnancy - preparing your body and health before you start trying.

🌿 Trying to conceive - when pregnancy hasn’t happened as quickly as you’d hoped, taking a broader look at the foundations that may be influencing fertility and identifying where further assessment or specialist care may be appropriate.

🌿 Supporting fertility treatment - providing additional whole-person support alongside IVF or other fertility treatment, complementing your specialist care.

🌿 Optimising whole-person health - exploring nutrition, metabolic health, lifestyle, cycle health, nutrient status and the many factors that contribute to reproductive wellbeing.

As a Nurse Practitioner and accredited Natural Fertility New Zealand (NFNZ) educator, I’ve brought together my clinical knowledge and experience, fertility awareness education and passion for women’s health to create a pathway that is both clinically grounded and genuinely individualised.

I’ve poured a lot of thought, research, clinical experience and heart into creating this - and I can’t wait to share more with you ❤️

As a Nurse Practitioner, I spend my days supporting others with their health.

Like everyone else, I’m also navigating my own.

Changing hormones, a busy career, family life, and trying to prioritise my own wellbeing. Some things have helped enormously. Others haven’t. And that’s okay.

For a long time, I thought that because I knew what to do, I should simply be able to do it.

I expected things of myself that I would never have expected of the people I care for. I wanted change to happen quickly, instead of recognising that lasting change takes time.

Navigating my own health reminded me that knowing what to do isn’t the same as being able to make it part of your life.

The best healthcare starts with understanding the person, not just their blood test results or diagnosis.

Those things matter, but they’re only part of the story.

Because the best plan isn’t the perfect one.

It’s the one that fits your life.

A theme that comes up in professional supervision often is the feeling of being behind.

Behind in our careers.
Behind where our colleagues are.
Behind in life.

But behind compared to who?

We rarely compare the whole picture. We don’t see someone else’s responsibilities, setbacks, priorities, or the season of life they’re are in.

I’ve learnt that careers, like life, have seasons.
Not every season is about moving forward as quickly as possible.

Some are about learning.
Some are about rebuilding.
Some are simply about finding balance.

Maybe you’re not behind.
Maybe you’re exactly where you need to be for this moment in life ✨

I‘ve been a little quieter on here lately.

Not because I haven’t had anything to say, but because I’ve been reflecting on the kind of practice I’m continuing to build and how I turn up as a clinician. I struggle with social media at the best of times, however want to carve a little space in here that celebrates reflection, authenticity and honest conversations.

It’s taken me a while to realise that what I do isn’t what defines my practice. It’s the philosophy behind it.

As a Nurse Practitioner, I’m committed to evidence-informed care, but I’ve also learnt that evidence is only one part of good healthcare. Every person brings their own story, experiences, values, priorities, and goals. Good clinical care is about integrating those things with evidence and clinical reasoning to make decisions together.

Whether I’m supporting a woman navigating a complex health concern, providing professional supervision to another clinician, or working with organisations to improve healthcare, my approach is the same.

Listen first.

Understand the whole context.

Apply evidence thoughtfully.

Review, reflect, and adapt as we learn more.

Because healthcare isn’t just about solving problems.

It’s about working in partnership to navigate complexity and find the approach that’s right for the person in front of you.

That’s the conversation I’d like to have more of 💖
