Do you ever feel like you have to earn the right to rest?
This is something I’ve become increasingly aware of in myself - and I see versions of it in a lot of the women I work with too.
I find it incredibly difficult to feel like I’ve done enough or like there is actually time to rest.
There’s always something else that could be cleaned, organised, answered, achieved or ticked off the list. And when I do stop, part of me is still keeping score.
Have I actually done enough to justify sitting down?
For me, I think a lot of this comes from old patterns and experiences that taught my nervous system that being productive, useful and “on top of things” equals safety.
And when you’ve spent years functioning like that, rest doesn’t necessarily feel restful…
Sometimes it feels uncomfortable. Lazy. Wasteful. Even unsafe.
So one thing I’m consciously practising at the moment is resting before everything is finished.
Leaving something undone on purpose.
Sitting down when there are still dishes in the kitchen.
Choosing the thing that feels nourishing instead of automatically choosing the thing that feels productive.
And reminding myself:
Rest isn’t the reward for finishing everything. Rest is part of what allows me to keep going.
I’m not a nervous system regulation expert. I’m someone who has lived a lot of this, researched it, read about it, and continues to work on it in my own life.
And because I see so many capable, high-achieving women carrying the same invisible pressure, I think it’s worth talking about.
So if this sounds familiar, maybe try something small this weekend:
Let one thing remain undone - and give yourself PERMISSION rest anyway.
Notice what comes up.
You might be surprised by how difficult it feels.
And that, in itself, can tell you something. 💜
I think it’s also important to figure out what rest looks like for you…
🌻It might be sleeping, lying down or reading a book in your favourite chair.
💜It might be watching your favourite tv show or movie or taking a walk around your neighbourhood.
🌻It might simply be in the kitchen, or pottering around your house.
Find what feels restorative for you - and then do it! 😊
