When life is busy, fast paced and we are always thinking of the next thing to do it can keep us in a heightened nervous system state, elevating our stress hormones, increasing our heart rate, we tend to shallow breath and feel pain and tension more deeply. It can also make us focus on the negative, what haven't done or achieved.
Pausing and noticing the positive small things around us, the environment we live in, the sensations we feel, the everyday things that give us a sense of safety and security can shift our nervous system to our parasympathetic state - our rest and digest side of nervous system which does the opposite to our physiology. We breath deeper, our tension releases, and reducing cortisol can actually change our time perception so life can feel a little slower.
