💚 **MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 2026** 💚

🌿 BELONGING MATTERS – Because Everyone Deserves to Feel Supported 🌿

**12–18 October 2026**

This year's theme, *Belonging Matters*, reminds us how important it is to feel connected, valued and supported by those around us.

💚 At Health Reporoa, we believe no one in our rural community should have to face life's challenges alone.

Life can be tough at times, and whether you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, struggling with relationships, experiencing grief, or simply need someone to talk to, reaching out is a sign of strength.

🌿 **DID YOU KNOW?**

Health Reporoa offers a FREE, CONFIDENTIAL COUNSELLING SERVICE for our rural community.

Our experienced counsellor, Deidre, provides a safe, welcoming and supportive space where you can talk, be heard and feel valued — without the worry of cost.

You don't have to be in crisis to ask for support. Sometimes just having someone to listen can make all the difference.

💚 You Matter. Your Mental Health Matters. You Belong.

📞 To make an appointment, contact Deidre directly on 027 677 9010.

🌿 Together We Thrive 🌿

It is Mental Health Awareness Week, and this year the theme is Belonging Matters. ❤️

Feeling connected and supported isn’t just important for our mental health, its important for our heart health too.

This week, make time to connect:
💬 Check in with a friend, whānau member or colleague.
🚶 Invite someone to join you for a walk.
☕ Spend time together doing something you enjoy.

You don’t have to manage mental health challenges alone. If it’s affecting your daily life, talk to your doctor or nurse.

And if you’re looking for a place to connect with others on a heart journey, join our Heart Foundation support group. Link below.

Kia Ora Whānau
Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) issued an official letter to schools announcing that starting in Term 3 2026, the School Based Immunisation Programme is switching to delivering only a single dose of the HPV vaccine.
The key details from the official Te Whatu Ora communications outline the following:
What is Changing?
• Single-dose school delivery: From Term 3 2026, children will receive one dose of the HPV vaccine through the School Based Immunisation Programme. This applies primarily to students in Years 7 and 8.
• No second dose at school: If a child receives their first dose at school, they will not be offered a second dose through the school program.

Why the Change Was Made
• High protection rate: Global medical evidence demonstrates that a single dose offers excellent long-term immunity. Studies have shown that a single dose provides around 97–98% protection against the high-risk HPV types that cause cancers.
• International alignment: With this change, New Zealand aligns with recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as systems in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Is a Second Dose Still Available?
Yes. The officially approved medical course in New Zealand remains two doses for children aged 9 to 14. While schools only administer one injection, parents who still wish for their child to receive a second dose can get it free of charge through community health providers, pharmacies, or General Practices (GPs) at least six months after the first dose. Please phone Health Reporoa 07 3337301 if you would like your child to have another dose.
Next Steps for Parents
• Consent forms: Schools will continue to distribute physical or digital consent forms. Vaccination at school requires parental or caregiver consent before any injection is given.
• Already vaccinated: If your child has already received one dose at school previously, they are considered well-protected, and no further action is required at school.

Ngā mihi,
Reporoa Health Nurses

Extra protection for our littlest: Free flu vaccines now available for under 5s

From today, all children aged 6 months up to their fifth birthday can get a free influenza (flu) vaccine.

This change comes as flu continues to cause high rates of illness and hospitalisations in young children this season, with children under five experiencing some of the highest rates of flu-related hospital care.

The flu season started later than usual and is expected to continue, so it's not too late to get vaccinated. The current flu vaccine is also a good match for the flu virus circulating most widely this year.

✅ Free for all children aged 6 months to under 5 years, pregnant women, and people aged 65+
✅ Helps protect against serious illness
✅ Helps protect your family and community.

The flu vaccine is also free for many people with certain medical conditions.

Book at bookmyvaccine.nz or contact your GP, pharmacy, Hauora Māori provider, Pacific health provider, or local immunisation clinic. Many providers also offer walk-in appointments.
