Healthy Families Rotorua Improving the health of our community where we live, learn, work and play

Healthy Families NZ is about all of us working together to make our communities healthier places to be. Preventing chronic disease requires a comprehensive and coordinated approach that is sustained over the longer-term. Healthy Families NZ is the Government’s flagship prevention platform, and is a key part of the Government’s wider approach to helping New Zealanders live healthy, active lives. By focusing on the places we spend most of our time, Healthy Families NZ aims to impact the health and wellbeing of entire populations, both now and for future generations to come. The key areas of focus for Healthy Families NZ include:
Improved nutrition
Increased physical activity
More people smokefree
Reduced alcohol-related harm.

💚 Mental Health Awareness Week 2026.

Content warning: This video includes imagery depicting grief, loss and emotional distress, which some viewers may find upsetting. Please take care when watching.

This year's theme, Belonging Matters – Ko au ko koe, ko koe ko au (I am you, and you are me), reminds us how important connection, inclusion and a sense of belonging are to our mental wellbeing.

Whether it's checking in on someone, sharing a kōrero or simply making time for whānau and friends, small gestures can help people feel valued, connected and supported.

Hari Wiki o Te Reo Māori 🥳
Today marks the beginning of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2026 🎉

Here are 3 small but impactful ways we can all contribute to the revitalisation of te reo rangatira and be Toa Rauora for Te Reo Māori.

🗣️ Learn to pronounce Māori words correctly.

📍Learn and use the original Māori words for towns and cities in your everyday conversations - Tama-ki-makau-rau (Auckland), Kirikiriroa (Hamilton), etc.

🙋‍♂️Use Māori greetings daily: Ata mārie (Good morning), Kia ora (Hello), Ka kite anō (See you again), Pō mārie (Good night).

🏅Bonus tip: Use https://maoridictionary.co.nz/ for all your simple Māori-to-English or English-to-Māori translation queries.

Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu - Although small, it is precious like pounamu 💚
Kia kaha te reo Māori, e te iwi 🙌

We went door-knocking along Ariariterangi Street this morning to start mapping the heritage fruit trees growing around Ōhinemutu as part of our Ngā Rākau Huaora kaupapa, a collab with Maraeroa Mahinga Kai.

We were thrilled to find apple, mandarin, lemon, lemonade, orange, grape, plum and fig trees, with whānau happy for us to take cuttings from these special old trees so they can be propagated and shared with future generations.

Through Ngā Rākau Huaora, we hope to help care for these trees, preserve the stories connected to them, and eventually distribute new trees grown from the OGs back out into the community.

We’ll be making our way around the rest of Ōhinemutu over the coming days, so if you have an old fruit tree at your whare that you’d like to be part of the kaupapa, let us know! 🌳🍎🍋

Ngā mihi to everyone who took part in and contributed to the Hā o te Ora prototype, where we explored how taonga puoro could support smoking and va**ng cessation. In this video, we hear from some of the team behind the kaupapa, as well as one of the participants, who share their experiences of Hā o te Ora.

We're bringing together organisations working alongside rangatahi to explore how they can better support rangatahi aspirations across Rotorua. Building on what rangatahi have already told us about what helps them thrive and the barriers they face, the group will co-design a collective impact session to look at where stronger connections, shared knowledge, and collective influence could make a difference.

An ecosystem of organisations working with rangatahi across Rotorua is coming together to explore how they can better support rangatahi aspirations across the
