One of the biggest limitations of scales is that they can't tell you whether weight loss is coming from fat or muscle. You could be losing fat, gaining muscle, losing muscle - without seeing a big change on the scales.

Our latest article explains why body composition gives you a clearer picture and how DXA compares with gym-based body composition machines. Read more here: https://boneandbodyblueprint.rocketspark.co.nz/blog/post/171025/body-composition-why-the-scales-are-lying-to-you/

Heidi discusses weight-loss medication on Anastasia Bennett's podcast. A very interesting listen! Weight-loss medications are becoming very common and have many benefits but when the number on the scales starts going down, it's important to understand if that's fat or muscle you're losing.

Bariatric surgery can have an important effect on bone health.

Our latest article in the Franklin Times looks at why bone density monitoring matters after surgery, particularly during periods of rapid weight loss.

By Bone & Body Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for obesity and can significantly improve obesity- related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obstructive sleep apnoea. Follow-up DEXA scans! When, why?

For bone density, if your first scan is normal and you do not have high-risk factors for osteoporosis, we generally recommend a follow-up scan every 5 years.

For body composition, timing depends on your health and fitness goals.

A follow-up body comp scan can be useful if you are strength training or losing weight - to check that changes are coming from fat loss rather than muscle loss.

Many people also use body composition scans as a yearly health check - a way to keep an eye on muscle mass and visceral fat levels.

The scales can show your weight, but DXA helps show what is actually changing.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Andrew Bayly MP back into our Pukekohe clinic for a follow-up DXA scan.

It’s always lovely to see clients return and continue building a clearer picture of their health. A first scan gives valuable information, but a follow-up scan can show what has changed. This is where DXA becomes especially useful!

Thanks again for visiting us Andrew. We really appreciate your support and interest in what we do.

We’ve had two interesting case studies at our clinics where patients had spinal fractures identified through DEXA scanning. These were fractures that were not detected on traditional x-ray.

Vertebral Assessment is a specialised, referral-only DEXA service that we provide in Te Awamutu & Pukekohe. It can be very useful for patients with ongoing pain but no fracture is being seen on x-ray.
