He marama pai tēnei mō te taha hinengaro.

This month, our kōrero was taha hinengaro and what a month it was.
We karakia'd. We remembered, on the days for remembering. We celebrated the reo and the kupu that hold us. We talked about the rongoā already in our hands, and the mahi of asking twice.

But the real kōrero didn't happen on this page it happened in your whare. The cuppa poured. The "kei te pēhea koe?" asked properly. The karakia breathed in the car. That's the taha hinengaro being cared for, whānau to whānau, the way it always has been.

And none of it belongs to September. Take it with you it was always yours anyway.Kia tau te hinengaro, kia manawanui te ngākau. He rongoā te kōrero, he rongoā kei ō ringaringa kē. Noho ora mai, e te whānau 💙

"Kei te pēhea koe?" "Kei te pai."

We all know that exchange. And sometimes "kei te pai" is true but sometimes it's just the easiest answer.

Our people are good at asking twice. A cuppa poured without asking. "Nē? He aha kē te kōrero?" Sitting alongside someone until the real kōrero is ready to come out. Not fixing just staying.

And we've all been on the other side of it too held back because we weren't sure what to say. But most of us can remember a time someone just showed up for us, no perfect words, and it mattered anyway. That's the thing about a kōrero: it doesn't need to be got right. It just needs to happen.

Kia manawanui, e te whānau. He rongoā te kōrero 💙

He karakia whakatau

Hā ki roto. Hā ki waho.
Kia tau te mauri e kōkiri nei.
I ngā piki me ngā heke.
Ko te rangimārie tāku e rapu nei.
Tīhei mauri ora!

Breathe in. Breathe out. Settle the mauri stirring within through the ups and the downs, it is peace that I seek.

Nā Mero Irihapeti Rokx tēnei karakia i tito he taonga mō te tauwhiro ā-wairua, ā, ka nui te mihi ki a ia. 🙏

Whenever the day is heavy, whenever the hinengaro is stirring this karakia asks for nothing but your own breath. Keep it close. Use it in the car, before the hui, after the hard kōrero.

And it's just one of the rongoā our people have always carried. This month our kōrero has been about taha hinengaro and the truth is, our people have always known how to care for the hinengaro, long before anyone called it "wellbeing."

Karakia to settle the day. Waiata that lift the wairua. Kai shared around a table. Two feet in the moana. A kōrero with someone who gets it. Time with the whenua, time with the mokopuna, time with your own thoughts.

None of that needs a programme or a plan. He rongoā kei ō ringaringa kē the rongoā is already in your hands. Handed down, ake ake ake.

He aha te rongoā i tō whare?

What's the thing that settles your hinengaro?

We'd love to hear it 💬

💗 Putiputi Ātaahua is coming to Whakatāne 🌸

We’re helping spread the word to our whānau that the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s Pink Campervan, Putiputi Ātaahua, will be in the Whakatāne area from Monday 28 September.

The Pink Campervan travels around the motu with specialist breast nurses, providing free education and support around breast health and breast cancer, and helping people know where to go if they have concerns.

This is an important kaupapa for our whānau. Around 1 in every 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer each day in Aotearoa is Māori, and wāhine Māori are 33% more likely to die from breast cancer than other women. (breastcancerfoundation.org.nz)

Early detection can make a real difference, so if you’ve been putting off getting checked, this is a good opportunity to kōrero, ask questions and find out what support is available. 💗

📍 Whakatāne | From Monday 28 September

The service is free and the team can provide referrals for screening mammograms or to your GP if you have concerning symptoms. They do not carry out physical examinations or fundraising.

Keep an eye out for Putiputi Ātaahua around the rohe, and if you see the team, pop by and say kia ora! 🌺

Please share this with your whānau and friends so we can help get the word out.

Ake, ake, ake a forever language.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori has ended. The reo hasn't that was never how it worked.

It lives in the karakia before kai, the waiata in the car, the kupu we pass to our tamariki and mokopuna without even thinking about it. Not one week a year ake, ake, ake.

And here's the thing about forever: it's true of the hinengaro too. Looking after ourselves and each other was never meant for an awareness day or a special week. It's the everyday mahi the small kōrero, the checking in, the cuppa poured at the right moment. That's been our kaupapa all month, and it doesn't end either.

Wherever the reo lives in your whare a mihi, a waiata, a single kupu kei te rawe.

That's a forever language doing what it does 💙

Kupu o te Rā: MANAWANUI ✨

Manawa = heart.
Nui = great.
Manawanui = a steadfast heart. Patience, courage, the strength to keep going.

"Kia manawanui" is what we say to someone in a hard season: hold fast, your heart is big enough for this.

It's not about pretending things are easy. It's the kind of strength our tūpuna knew well the quiet kind that endures. Ake, ake, ake.

If someone in your world needs this kupu today, send it to them. Kia manawanui, e hoa 💙
Whakamahia tēnei kupu i tēnei rā drop it into your next kōrero 💬

Kupu o te Rā: TAU ✨

Kia tau to settle, to be calm, to be at peace.

You'll hear it in "kia tau te rangimārie" may peace settle upon you or simply "kia tau, e hoa" when someone needs a moment to breathe.

It's a small kupu that carries a lot. Not "calm down" more like let things find their resting place. The way water goes still. The way a manu settles on a branch.

He kupu mō tēnei wiki, mō ngā rā katoa hoki. If today feels busy or heavy, kia tau te hinengaro let the mind settle.

Whakamahia tēnei kupu i tēnei rā drop it into your next kōrero 💬

Ake, Ake, Ake he reo mō ake tonu atu 💙

Today we hold close every whānau who carries loss, and everyone who has known that darkness themselves. Kei konei koutou, kei konei mātou.

To anyone finding it heavy right now: you matter. Your kōrero matters. There is no shame in reaching out that's not weakness, that's the whare asking for what it needs.
Support is there, day and night:

And for all of us this is a day to check in. A kōrero, a cuppa, a "kei te pēhea koe?" can carry more than we know.Ka whawhai tonu mātou mō te oranga o ngā whānau katoa. Arohanui 💙

He oranga te korikori tinana! 🏆

When our kaumātua came together for the kaumātua olympics, it wasn't just about the games although the competition was fierce! 😄

Moving the tinana lifts the hinengaro. Laughing with your people feeds the wairua. Being together strengthens the whānau. One morning, every wall of the whare that's what our kaumātua showed us.

Ka nui te mihi ki ō tātou kaumātua you remind us what hauora really looks like.

Tell us how your whānau love to move together? 💬
