is a progressive disorder of the brain and the most common cause of dementia. It gradually damages nerve cells and the connections between them, affecting memory, thinking, language, behavior, and eventually the ability to perform everyday activities independently. The disease is associated with abnormal accumulation of beta-amyloid and tau proteins in the brain, alongside progressive loss of neurons and brain tissue.

Early Alzheimer's disease may appear as repeatedly forgetting recently learned information, difficulty planning or solving problems, getting confused about time or place, struggling with familiar tasks, or experiencing changes in mood and behavior. These changes should not simply be dismissed as normal aging. Early assessment can help distinguish Alzheimer's from other potentially reversible causes of cognitive impairment and from other forms of dementia.

Although there is currently no cure, early diagnosis has important benefits. It allows patients and families to plan care, address cardiovascular and lifestyle risk factors, access available treatments and support services, and make informed decisions while the individual can still participate in them. Regular physical activity, management of blood pressure and diabetes, avoiding to***co, maintaining social and cognitive activity, and protecting sleep and hearing health can all contribute to healthier aging.

is a chronic digestive disorder in which the stomach empties food into the small intestine more slowly than normal, despite the absence of a physical blockage. The condition occurs when the nerves or muscles responsible for stomach movement are impaired, affecting the normal process of digestion. Diabetes is one of the most common causes, although gastroparesis may also develop after surgery, viral infections, neurological disorders, or for reasons that remain unknown.

Common symptoms include persistent nausea, vomiting, early fullness after eating, bloating, abdominal discomfort, acid reflux, and unintended weight loss. Delayed stomach emptying can also make it difficult to maintain proper nutrition and may interfere with blood glucose control in people living with diabetes, increasing the complexity of disease management.

Diagnosis usually involves specialized tests that evaluate how quickly the stomach empties food. Treatment focuses on dietary modifications, optimizing underlying medical conditions, medications that stimulate stomach motility, and, in severe cases, advanced nutritional or procedural interventions. Raising awareness can help individuals recognize persistent symptoms early and seek appropriate medical evaluation.

( ) is a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder that affects the motor neurons—the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. The condition is most commonly caused by mutations in the SMN1 gene, resulting in a deficiency of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. Without adequate SMN protein, motor neurons gradually degenerate, leading to progressive muscle weakness and loss of movement.

Symptoms and severity vary depending on the type of SMA, but common features include muscle weakness, poor muscle tone, delayed motor milestones, difficulty sitting or walking, swallowing difficulties, and respiratory complications. Advances in newborn screening have made earlier diagnosis possible, allowing treatment to begin before significant motor neuron loss occurs—an important factor in improving long-term outcomes.

Today, significant progress in disease-modifying therapies, together with physiotherapy, respiratory care, nutritional support, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation, has transformed the outlook for many individuals living with SMA. During SMA Awareness Month, we highlight the importance of early diagnosis, timely intervention, and continued research to improve the lives of patients and their families.

refers to inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viral infections including Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. While some forms cause short-term illness, chronic hepatitis B and C can persist for years without symptoms, gradually damaging the liver and increasing the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Many people living with chronic hepatitis remain undiagnosed because early infection may not cause noticeable symptoms. When present, symptoms can include fatigue, jaundice, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, and loss of appetite. Screening is especially important for individuals with known risk factors or potential exposure.

The good news is that hepatitis is increasingly preventable and treatable. Safe and effective vaccines are available for hepatitis A and B, while modern antiviral therapies can cure most cases of hepatitis C. On , we encourage regular screening, vaccination where appropriate, and greater awareness to help eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health

highlights the importance of protecting brain health throughout every stage of life. The brain controls movement, memory, emotions, communication, and countless vital body functions, making neurological health essential for overall wellbeing.

Many neurological conditions—including stroke, dementia, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury, can have a profound impact on quality of life. While not all neurological disorders are preventable, many risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and poor sleep can be addressed through healthier lifestyle choices.

Maintaining brain health involves regular physical activity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, cognitive stimulation, and effective management of chronic medical conditions. On , we encourage everyone to prioritize brain health through prevention, early recognition of neurological symptoms, and timely access to medical care.

is the most aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, arising from glial cells that normally support nerve cells. Its rapid growth and tendency to infiltrate surrounding brain tissue make it particularly difficult to remove completely through surgery.

Symptoms depend on the tumor's location but commonly include persistent headaches, seizures, memory problems, weakness, speech difficulties, and personality or behavioral changes. Diagnosis usually involves MRI imaging followed by biopsy to confirm the tumor type.

Treatment often combines surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, while ongoing research continues to explore targeted therapies and immunotherapy. Raising awareness encourages earlier evaluation of persistent neurological symptoms and supports continued research into more effective treatments.
