Story time. (Posted with permission)
I first met Brix in 2023, when I was still the only pediatrician at Bislig District Hospital. His mom told me he had been admitted almost every week because of one persistent problem: vomiting. He had undergone several tests, seen specialist, and yet everything came back normal. He was missing school often, and I could see how exhausting and frustrating it was for the whole family.
After ruling out other serious causes, I began to suspect that Brix might have Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, a rare and often difficult condition to diagnose. I told his mom that we could try managing him as such and thankfully, he responded.
The weekly admissions stopped. His mom told me how much the medication had helped, and honestly, it felt like a little miracle.
I will never forget Brix as he is the first patient I was able to diagnose with this condition. I thank God for giving me wisdom, guiding me, and allowing me to be an instrument in helping others. I’m also grateful to my training institution, the National Children’s Hospital, where I encountered a similar case years ago. That experience stayed with me and, years later, helped me recognize it in Brix. Also grateful for his parents for trusting me completely which is essential in managing Brix’s condition.
Today, Brix still comes to my clinic for his routine check-ups and maintenance treatment. And every time I see him, I’m reminded that sometimes, one small breakthrough can change a child’s life. ❤️
