🚴 WHAT TO DO WHEN A CYCLIST COLLAPSES DURING A LONG-DISTANCE RIDE?
🚨 A SUDDEN COLLAPSE CAN BE A LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY!
Imagine joining a long-distance cycling event when, suddenly, a fellow cyclist collapses on the roadside and becomes unresponsive. Would you know what to do?
In situations like this, every second counts. Recognizing sudden cardiac arrest and responding immediately can make a life-saving difference.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
✅ 1. Ensure Scene Safety – Check for traffic, moving bicycles, and other hazards before approaching.
✅ 2. Check Responsiveness – Tap the person's shoulders and shout to see if they respond.
✅ 3. Call for Emergency Help – Activate emergency services and ask someone to get an AED immediately.
✅ 4. Check Breathing – Look for normal breathing. Gasping is not normal breathing. If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, assume cardiac arrest.
✅ 5. Start CPR – Begin high-quality chest compressions at 100–120 per minute and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
✅ 6. Use an AED – Apply it as soon as available, follow its instructions, and make sure everyone is clear when it analyzes the rhythm or delivers a shock.
✅ 7. Continue Resuscitation – Continue CPR and follow the AED prompts until the person shows signs of life, trained responders take over, or you cannot continue.
💡 REMEMBER:Do not assume a collapsed cyclist is simply exhausted or dehydrated. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen during physical activity, and immediate CPR and early AED use can improve the chance of survival.
At WePump Learning Center, we believe that life-saving knowledge should be ready to use when emergencies happen. Through BLS–ACLS training, healthcare workers and responders can strengthen their skills in recognizing cardiac arrest, performing CPR, using an AED, and working effectively as a team.
🫀 Recognize early. Respond quickly. Save lives.
