The Newborn Screening Center – NIH, being the first Department of Health (DOH) accredited Newborn Screening Center in the country, screens for 29+ metabolic and other congenital disorders to prevent mental retardation and death.

Bilang pagkilala sa mahalagang ambag ng mga pampubliko at pribadong ospital, lokal na pamahalaan, at mga katuwang na organisasyon sa pagsusulong ng kalusugan ng mga bagong silang na sanggol, pinarangalan ng Department of Health – Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH-MMCHD) ang mga institusyong naging bahagi ng pagpapatatag at pagpapaunlad ng Newborn Screening (NBS) Program sa rehiyon.
Isinagawa ang pagkilala bilang bahagi ng pagdiriwang ng ika-30 anibersaryo ng Newborn Screening Program sa Pilipinas. Binibigyang-diin ng okasyong ito ang mahalagang papel ng maagang pagtukoy sa mga congenital at metabolic disorder upang mabigyan ang mga sanggol ng agarang pangangalaga at angkop na interbensiyong medikal.
Binigyang-diin ng DOH-MMCHD na sa likod ng bawat matagumpay na newborn screening ay ang sama-samang pagsisikap ng mga healthcare worker na kumukuha ng sample, laboratory personnel na nagsisiguro ng maayos na pagproseso nito, at mga practitioner at program implementer na nagsasagawa ng follow-up at referral upang matiyak na natutugunan ang pangangailangan ng mga sanggol na nangangailangan ng karagdagang pagsusuri o paggamot.
Sa pamamagitan ng Expanded Newborn Screening (ENBS), mas maraming kondisyong maaaring makaapekto sa paglaki at kalusugan ng isang bata ang natutukoy sa mas maagang yugto. May kakayahan itong magsuri para sa mahigit 29 na congenital at iba pang metabolic disorder, na nagbibigay-daan sa napapanahong interbensiyon at nakatutulong upang maiwasan ang malubhang komplikasyon o permanenteng pinsala sa kalusugan.
Bukod dito, mahalaga rin ang suporta ng PhilHealth sa pamamagitan ng Newborn Care Package na sumasaklaw sa newborn screening. Sa tulong ng benepisyong ito, mas napalalawak ang pagkakataon ng mga pamilya na makinabang sa serbisyong pangkalusugan at nababawasan ang pangamba sa gastusin para sa kanilang mga bagong silang na sanggol.
