Imkaan Welfare Organization Imkaan was founded on the tenet that each child not only has the right to live but to thrive.

We believe that every child has a right to live and that all children deserve to be part of a loving family. We aim to work towards our ultimate goal of ensuring that no child is murdered or abandoned in extreme conditions and that every child is placed with a loving and secure family. Further we aim at providing support to women and children by establishing clinics for prenatal and neonatal care. Our aim is not only to provide free of cost or subsidized healthcare to children and expecting mothers but also support the community in decreasing risks and educating women to enable them to make informed decisions about their lives, health and families during pregnancy child birth and motherhood through education and intervention.

Every door we push open brings us closer to the future we imagine.

Through “Our Stories, Our Power,” young girls came together to share their experiences, voice their aspirations and reflect on the barriers in their way. Through creative activities, they imagined themselves as the people they hope to become, and explored the doors that stand between them and that future. For many, those doors are shaped by the lack of identity documents, which limits their access to education, opportunity, recognition and a sense of belonging.

The day was also about being heard and finding solidarity. As some of the girls reflected: “We were heard for the first time” and “We knew we are not alone.”

The Statelessness Month of Action, led by the Global Movement Against Statelessness, draws attention to the millions of people worldwide who have no nationality. Without it, they can be denied birth registration, schooling, healthcare and the right to work, and often remain invisible in the systems meant to protect them. The month centres their voices, so that people living with statelessness tell their own stories and lead the call for change. Here in Karachi, we marked it with “Our Stories, Our Power.”

Behind every missing document is a person with dreams, ambitions and a future worth recognising. Our stories matter. Our identities matter. Our voices deserve to be heard.

Where Our Feelings Grow

During our children’s programme “My Story, My Colours,” we traced a banyan tree onto a long sheet and left its branches bare. Each child drew their own feeling face on a paper leaf, happy, shy, excited, tired, and hung it on the tree. Around the trunk, they drew their community: homes, streets, the sea, friends and family. At the roots, they added what helps them feel good together.

A banyan sends down new roots wherever it spreads, until one tree becomes a grove. So does a community that holds each other up.

Creating spaces where young women can learn, speak openly, and support one another is an important step towards stronger and more informed communities.

Imkaan organised an inter-community awareness meeting with female youth in Machar Colony, bringing participants together to discuss identity documentation, challenges faced by their communities, and available avenues for seeking assistance. The meeting also provided a safe space for women and girls to share their experiences, raise concerns, and discuss issues affecting their lives.

The session encouraged participants to share the knowledge gained with others in their communities, particularly those who may face barriers in accessing legal aid or documentation services. By promoting peer-to-peer learning, open dialogue, and collective support, the initiative aimed to empower young women to become community resource persons and help others access information and available support.

This week, Wahaj Imran from Science Fuse returned to Khel for another hands-on STEAM session — and this time the children explored the science of self-inflating balloons. What makes a balloon inflate on its own? The answer involves chemistry, gas, and a whole lot of curiosity. 🧪

Watching the children ask questions, make predictions, and see science happen right in front of them is exactly what this programme is about.

What a weekend!

We were proud to be the Official CSR Partner of the Balabala Carnival Playdate at Dolmen Mall Clifton — marking the launch of Asia’s leading international kidswear brand in Karachi, brought to Pakistan by Retail Central Pvt. Ltd., a division of Dolmen Group.

And our Khel gymnasts? They showed up and showed out. Our children from Machar Colony took the stage with a live gymnastics demonstration — bringing their talent, determination, and energy to an audience that gave them exactly the response they deserved.

This is what happens when brands and communities come together with purpose. We look forward to a meaningful partnership ahead with the Balabala Pakistan team.

A heartfelt thank you to Nermeen Kushtiwala, CEO of Retail Central Pvt. Ltd., for making this collaboration possible.

Behind every window, a story.

During our children’s programme “My Story, My Colours,” each child folded a sheet of paper into two window shutters, decorated the outside, and opened them to draw a picture from the heart.

Some windows opened onto favourite places: a home, a patch of park. In others, two best friends walked side by side. One girl drew herself, because she loves who she is. So many windows held Ammi. And among the faces of the people they love was Tahera Hasan, our founder and CEO.

Every window is a small view into how a child sees their world.

Part of “Our Stories, Our Power,” with the Global Movement Against Statelessness for the Statelessness Month of Action.

Seeds of Change has officially begun at Khel — and what a first session it was. The children launched into their STEAM journey the best way possible: with balloon rockets, big questions, and even bigger excitement.

This is just the beginning. Watch this space.

We are excited to announce our partnership with Science Fuse for Seeds of Change — a six-month hands-on STEAM learning programme at our Khel Learning and Recreational Centre in Machar Colony.

The programme will specifically engage girls from our Accelerated Learning Classes and older boys from Khel — bringing inquiry-based, activity-led STEAM experiences to 25 to 30 children who will explore science through curiosity, collaboration, and hands-on discovery. Science Communicator Wahaj Imran will lead the programme — conducting weekly STEAM sessions, evaluating children’s growth, and building the capacity of our Khel educator Miss Ayesha as an independent STEAM facilitator so the impact continues long after the programme ends.

The MOU was signed in the presence of our Founder and CEO Ms. Tahera Hasan, alongside Science Fuse’s Master Trainer and Science Communicator Shimaila Ahmad, Science Communicator Wahaj Imran, and former Assistant Project Officer Madiha Qasmi.

And true to Science Fuse tradition, the signing was followed by a hands-on activity — stacking books on eggs to discover just how much weight an eggshell can hold. Ms. Tahera Hasan was right in the thick of it. 🥚📚

Because science is for everyone, no matter the age. 😄

Welcome to Khel, Science Fuse. 🌍✨

Every child has a name, a story and a place where they belong.

As part of the Statelessness Month of Action, Imkaan Welfare Organisation partnered with the Global Movement Against Statelessness (GMAS) for “Our Stories, Our Power,” a community gathering in Karachi on 7 October where people told their own stories, in their own words and their own ways.

In our children’s programme, “My Story, My Colours,” 20 children aged 5 to 12 spent the morning on identity in the truest sense: their names, what they love, and where they belong. They played games about the things they love, found partners by acting out pictures, and painted windows into their own stories. Together they created Our Feelings Tree, a banyan whose roots keep spreading, just like the communities they grow up in.

The children’s artwork is coming soon. Watch this space.
