My article on *Auto-disable Safety Syringes*
(The Key to Safe Injections) published in World Time Magazine(Nov.2020)
Around 70 percent of the syringes being used in Pakistan are unsafe. The statistics become disturbing as most of the suppliers of traditional syringes are more concerned about their companies' earnings than the lives of the people. To minimize the risk of disease transmission through re-use of syringes, WHO guidelines encourage the use of auto-disable or auto-disposable (AD) safety syringes, where possible. Every year, the WHO estimates that two million needle-stick injuries occur worldwide. Pakistan is in dire need of a reform on the usage of syringes. With the total number of syringes being manufactured and imported into the country totalling at 200 million, surveys suggests on average almost every citizen gets 14 injections. An honest commitment and diligent participation of the service providers, the DRAP and the society in general supported by the policymakers can ensure safe injections.
