If you only have a few minutes before class or trainings, this is where I’d start.
A roll down warms up the whole back of your body in one go: hamstrings, calves and every section of your spine. Because your legs and core stay active, it’s waking things up rather than just hanging you upside down.
Why it belongs in a dancer’s warm-up: it’s the same movement pattern as a forward port de bras. Rolling down vertebra by vertebra teaches your spine to move in sequence, and rolling back up with your legs pulled up underneath you is exactly how we recover from a cambré forward, stacking the spine rather than swinging up from the lower back.
Do it slowly the first few times and you’ll notice where your spine likes to move in one big block. That’s the part to keep working on.
