This and the neck is the foundation of the Unicorn sound. Not the pickups. Pickups can only pick up whats there in the first place. This is 60 year carefully stored mahogany. It sounds sooo sweet. Like comparing a supermarket cheese with a 48 month old pecorino Romano from Campo de Fiori in Rome an early morning (been there). These bodies are for Avi and Gustav. Veneer is being glued after final drum sanding. Then stored for a couple of weeks before the master grade 5a maple tops is glued. Then it’s machined with our extreme precision jigs. Then the finishing bits comes in with tens of hours of fine sanding before finish is applied with a total of 16 coats consisting of the best wash coats, base coats and top coats. In the meantime the bodies have been thinned to everything between 39 down to 37 mm to tailor the exact response for the customer’s preference. 👌

Next batch. I tried building 4 at a time. But 2 basses are quite enough building high precision custom orders. And these two are certainly that. The one with magogany body is an order from bass extraordinaire Cassius Lambert with full quarter tone fretting up to fret 12 of the 26 fret custom orders PureArt bass. I think everything on this bass apart from the body shape is customised. The body too come to think of it. 😅 The other one is a PureArt fretless 5 string with a stunning quilt maple top. Ozellman 5 custom spec order headless coming up. Featuring the RIVIERA Guitar Tuning System headless system. I am so happy how this bass turned out visually. This ”headstock” has been designed through many hours of trial and error. You need to have a good functioning system and it needs to look right too. One thing is to have a reference point of where the neck ends. I think this ticks all boxes.

Ozellman 5 headless bridge routing. Last bits vefore finishing. All screws must be countersunk. It’s detail but that’s what we are all about, the big family of maker, designer, bridgemaker RIVIERA Guitar Tuning System and our dear customers. This bass goes to the very nice human being called Tom Gustavsson Things moving on nicely now when the new machines are calibrated and running soooo smooth…

TIP OF THE DAY!

Did you know that efter you have set up your bass with a straight neck and intoned it and adjusted everything, the only thing you need to adjust is the truss rod. If your bass is healthy the only thing that can eventually move about is the neck. Most noticeable if you have a low action. One thing that is a tell tale sign is if you bass suddenly feels "off" to play. Either more fret buzz or feels sluggish. If it feels sluggish your neck have probably bent a bit "forward" and needs to be tightened slightly.

So there you have it!

PS On gigs the only thing I need to bring for the bass is a 4 mm hex key just in case. (I have a fairly low action)

These two going into the finishing room tomorrow for infusion. After workshop rebuild and new AMAZING heavy machinery plus holiday in Rome it is nice to get things done and out to customers. 🙏❤️☀️😊 Bass 1: Ozellman 5 headless custom order in maple burl top. Bass 2: Artist 5 with solid mahogany body. Both basses feature as always everything bookmatched regarding beck and body, 60 year old stock light resonant mahogany. And of course everything weighed up and tuned for maximum performance.

This is one of only three Unicorn guitars in existence. Built mid 2000s when I started up things. This one is my dad’s guitar. What started as three new pickups quickly escalated into a full rebuild and refurb. I have learned tons from my parents and it feels good to return the gift and passing it on. Balancing current orders with getting this one out of the workshop. 😅👌❤️🙏

Sorry for not posting stuff from the workshop lately. I have got some new heavy machinery now and everytime I do upgrades, minor or major there’s always upheaval of the whole shop. Because when you move one thing you got to move the next etc. I am off to Rome this week and I will be back on 28th so then it’s full speed in a new highly effective workshop with a new Dust extractor with piping to every machine in the workshop, a new Drum sander which is a fantastic high precision tool for the last bit if precision sanding. And a revamped band saw. Plus a new fret slot machine that will save time and effort. And some new router tables for those specialised jobs. So all in all now a very effective workshop and more focus on the hand crafting bit is now easier to find time for. Anyone here that lives in Rome and want to have a coffee, just give me a shout! 🥳🇮🇹☀️☕️
