How can time-to-onset (TTO) data support signal validation?

Using adverse event reports from VigiBase, Annette Rudolph, Monica Tarapues, Oskar Gauffin, and Qun-Ying Yue explored TTO patterns for four glomerular diseases following COVID-19 vaccination, considering both new-onset and relapse cases. Their findings show how reviewing and characterising TTO data can complement traditional disproportionality analysis during signal validation.

Background Adverse event reports of glomerular diseases (GDs) following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination collected nationally have been shared to VigiBase, the global database of adverse event reports for medicines and vaccines. From literature reports, different GDs following COVID-1...

Advancing the state of the art in duplicate detection in 📚

Duplicate adverse event reports in large-scale pharmacovigilance databases can distort statistical analyses and may mislead clinical assessments. Computational methods are essential for identifying duplicates at scale.

Jim Barrett, Nils Erlanson, Joana Félix, and Niklas Norén introduce a new predictive model, 2025, designed to identify duplicate reports involving drugs and vaccines with improved precision and recall. By leveraging predictive modeling, free-text information, and country-specific features, the model outperforms vigiMatch 2017 while remaining computationally efficient and explainable.

Time-to-onset (TTO) is the time between the start of a medicine or vaccine of interest and the onset of a suspected adverse drug reaction (ADR) and can range from seconds to years. However, ADRs with a long TTO (≥6 months) can be challenging to assess and may go unrecognised.

UMC researchers explore TTO patterns in , with a special focus on long TTO, in a new poster.

🎥 Raising awareness of and digitalisation efforts with healthcare professionals and the public can improve reporting rates and help to strengthen reporting systems.

As part of their efforts to build a stronger reporting culture, the Therapeutics Information and Pharmacovigilance Centre (TIPC), part of the Namibia Medicines Regulatory Council (NMRC)🇳🇦, delivers sensitisation workshops across the country to encourage adverse event reporting.

Learn how these workshops deliver positive impact in health districts in the film below👇

Duplicate reports can make signal detection and validation more difficult. Although current screening methods can identify suspected duplicates at scale, false positives remain a challenge.

A new UMC research poster presents how a deterministic, probability-anchored system could support second-line assessment of suspected duplicate reports flagged by vigiMatch in .

Putting into practice 🌱

Mexico🇲🇽 is implementing new measures to integrate medication and medical device management and related waste streams. Through stricter controls on storage, transport, treatment, destruction, and documentation, the framework aims to reduce contamination of water, soil, and ecosystems while simultaneously limiting opportunities for medicine diversion, misuse, and illegal recycling.
