A Sudden Cramp Incident During My Massage Appointment Today

Something unexpected happened during my work today, and it reminded me again why I always keep certain dōTERRA products close by.

After finishing my first massage appointment this morning, I realized I had forgotten to bring my water bottle, so I asked my client if I could get some water. She brought me to the kitchen.

While walking past one of the rooms, I saw her mother-in-law sitting on the floor in pain. Her son quickly told me,

“My mum is having leg cramps!”

As a massage therapist, my instinct was naturally to go over and see if I could help.

I asked her where the pain was, and she told me:

“Both inner thighs are cramping at the same time.”

I have experienced calf cramps since I was young — sometimes so painful that they woke me up in the middle of the night — but this was the first time I had seen someone having severe cramps in both inner thighs at the same time.

I started by gently massaging the painful area, then applied dōTERRA Deep Blue Rub to her inner thigh and continued with slow, gentle massage.

Almost immediately, she told me:

“This feels very comfortable.”

I smiled and told her,

“When your muscles are not sore, Deep Blue may feel quite cooling or even a little ‘spicy’. But when your muscles are very tight and uncomfortable, that cooling and warming sensation can feel especially soothing.”

This is one of the reasons I like using Deep Blue Rub in my massage work.

It contains a blend of essential oils and topical ingredients commonly used for muscle comfort, and I often use it to help soothe tired, tight or overworked muscles.

I worked on one thigh first until she felt better, then moved to the other side.

But shortly after that, she told me her left lower back was cramping too.

I helped her change position and used gentle compression and massage on the lower back, again applying some Deep Blue Rub.

Then she said the right side of her lower back was also starting to cramp.

At that point, I noticed her clothes were already soaked with sweat.

I helped her turn over again and did some very gentle stretching. She later also complained of discomfort under the left side of her chest, so I continued with light massage only within her comfort level and kept checking how she was feeling.

Her inner thigh started hurting again, so I went back to gently massage the area.

I also asked her to slowly drink some warm water.

After some time, she finally told me:

“I feel better now.”

That was when I felt more reassured.

Even though Deep Blue Rub helped her feel more comfortable, I still strongly advised the family to bring her to a doctor or Polyclinic for a proper check-up.

This was not just a simple calf cramp. She had repeated cramping in both thighs and her lower back, together with heavy sweating, so it was important to find out whether dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, medication, circulation issues, or another medical reason could be involved.

Her son also told me that she has reactions to certain painkillers, including Aspirin and Panadol, which can cause swelling around her eyes, so I reminded them not to give her medication without proper medical advice.

Before leaving, I also told my client what to do if the cramps happen again: let her mother-in-law sit or lie somewhere safe, avoid forcing her to walk, use gentle warmth, light stretching if comfortable, and make sure she is adequately hydrated.

If the pain becomes severe or persistent, or if she develops weakness, numbness, chest pain, breathing difficulty or difficulty walking, she should seek medical attention promptly.

What made today even more memorable was how everything happened at just the right time.

This client was actually handed over to me for only four remaining appointments, and today was just my second session with her.

It was Friday, and we had no weekend appointment.

My afternoon appointment was also cancelled, so I was not rushing off to another client and had more time to stay.

Her mother-in-law happened to develop the cramps while I was still there.

Her son was home.

And I happened to be carrying my massage products, including Deep Blue Rub.

Sometimes life really works in unexpected ways.

I only went to the kitchen because I had forgotten my water bottle — yet that small moment brought me past the room at exactly the right time.

For me, essential oils and wellness products are not just something to keep on a shelf.

I like products that I can actually use in real life — during massage work, after physical activity, or whenever the body needs a little extra comfort.

Today, Deep Blue Rub became one of those useful little helpers again.

Of course, topical products can support comfort, but unusual or severe symptoms still need proper medical assessment.

Wishing this lovely elderly lady good health and a smooth recovery. 🙏
