Strengthening Vaccine Safety Surveillance in Sierra Leone

The African Vaccine Safety Sentinel Surveillance Network (AVASSN) training, supported by Africa CDC, brought together national and site-level teams in Freetown from 14–16 October 2026 to strengthen vaccine safety
monitoring in Sierra Leone.

The three-day training focused on identifying and monitoring Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESIs), improving data collection and reporting, and equipping participants with practical skills to support effective vaccine safety surveillance.

Through this initiative, Sierra Leone is strengthening its capacity to generate reliable vaccine safety evidence to inform public health decisions and improve preparedness for public health emergencies.

Babies who become infected at birth or in early infancy are at greater risk of developing lifelong hepatitis B infection.

To protect newborns, Sierra Leone is introducing the Hepatitis B Birth Dose in November 2026. The vaccine is given within 24 hours of birth at health facilities across the country.

From today until the launch, we will be sharing facts, quizzes and answers to your questions about the Hepatitis B Birth Dose. Follow our page so you don’t miss any of the posts, and share them with expectant mothers and families in your community.

Building a Sustainable Future for HPV Vaccination in Sierra Leone 🇸🇱💉

The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), Ministry of Health, with support from the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), successfully concluded a two-day HPV Sustainability Stock Take and Validation Workshop held from 6th–7th October 2026 at Country Lodge, Freetown.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders to review progress made in HPV vaccination, identify challenges affecting sustainability, and validate strategies to strengthen routine immunisation, school outreach, community engagement, and demand generation.

Discussions and recommendations from the workshop will help guide efforts to sustain the gains made in HPV vaccination and ensure continued access to this life-saving vaccine for eligible girls across Sierra Leone.

Together, we remain committed to protecting girls from cervical cancer and building a healthier future for the next generation.

Today, Sierra Leone’s immunisation experts began the Second NITAG Meeting on the Vaccine Portfolio Optimisation and Prioritization (VPOP), taking place from 28–30 September 2026.

VPOP is helping Sierra Leone review its vaccine portfolio using evidence to guide which vaccines should be prioritised and how immunisation resources can be used most effectively.

Over the next three days, NITAG members and partners will review and validate evidence generated by the seven VPOP working groups, identify gaps and inconsistencies, and build consensus around the findings.

The discussions will support recommendations on vaccine prioritisation and portfolio optimisation, aligned with Sierra Leone’s National Immunisation Strategy 2026–2030, national priorities and the Gavi 6.0 financing context.
This second meeting marks an important step in moving from evidence gathering to evidence-based decision-making for stronger immunisation outcomes in Sierra Leone.

Gender, equity and human rights are essential to delivering quality health services and ensuring that no one is left behind.

The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) participated in the Gender, Equity and Human Rights Integration in Health Training organised by the Ministry of Health Gender Desk with support from WHO Sierra Leone and World Health Organization African Region from 15–18 September 2026.

The training strengthened participants’ knowledge and skills in integrating gender, equity and human rights principles into health programmes and service delivery. For EPI, it provided an opportunity to further strengthen gender-responsive and inclusive immunisation planning and implementation, while addressing barriers that may affect access to vaccines.

EPI remains committed to ensuring equitable immunisation services for all and advancing the goal of Immunisation for All — leaving no one behind.

Behind every vaccine decision is a careful review of the evidence that will shape how we protect Sierra Leone’s children.

Sierra Leone’s National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) has concluded a two-day workshop reviewing which vaccines the country should prioritise next.

Through the Vaccine Portfolio Optimisation and Prioritization (VPOP), the group considered disease burden, vaccine effectiveness and safety, equity, cost, feasibility and long-term sustainability.

Every child matters, and every decision must be guided by the strongest available evidence.

The Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Sierra Leone welcomed the newly appointed Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, during his first leadership visit to the programme.

Dr. Kabba described EPI as his “first point of call” and commended the strong leadership of the Programme Manager, as well as the teamwork between EPI, partners, and the Ministry of Health.

“Immunization is important because it prevents deaths.” He also commended the efficiency of health system strengthening efforts, highlighting the effective use of resources to support not only vaccination but the health system as a whole.

During the visit, Dr. Kabba received an overview of EPI’s structure, ongoing activities, priorities, and chronogram for strengthening immunization services nationwide.

Expressing his excitement to be at EPI, Dr. Kabba encouraged the team to sustain the momentum, embrace innovation, and continue working with partners to improve immunization coverage and protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Together, we remain committed to reaching every child with every vaccine, everywhere. 💉🇸🇱
