Why does reflux happen? 🔍
In this clip, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Gökhan Türkçapar explains the basic mechanisms behind reflux disease, step by step.
Our body has two chambers, separated by the diaphragm. The abdominal cavity is under positive pressure, while the chest cavity is under negative pressure. At the point where the esophagus meets the stomach, there is no “valve”, only a sphincter-like structure. That’s why the idea of a “loose valve” is a myth.
Prof. Türkçapar also explains:

He had anti-reflux surgery at another center. We performed a revision 6 months later: his 3-year 7-month follow-up
Our patient had undergone anti-reflux surgery at another center. After the surgery, he could not eat bread or drink water.
He came to us 6 months later. We performed the revision surgery on February 14, 2023. The next day, he ate bread without any problem.
At the 3-year 7-month follow-up, he has no difficulty swallowing, no regurgitation, and no heartburn. Endoscopy also showed no abnormalities.

“When can you plan a pregnancy after anti-reflux surgery? 🤰
This is one of the most common questions we get from patients who want to start a family. In this video, we answer it and also hear from a patient whose life changed after surgery.
Our patient lived with two years of bloating, heartburn, and constant belching after every meal. Today, they have no complaints after eating and no difficulty swallowing. In their own words, they’ve moved on to “a completely different life.” Shall we watch?”
I kept the patient’s gender neutral, since it isn’t clear from the transcript. If the patient is a woman, I can switch to “she/her.” If you’d like a slightly more energetic call to action than “Shall we watch?”, such as “Watch the full video to find out,” I can adjust that too.

For 2 years, he couldn’t even drink water. Now he’s smiling. 🎥
Because of achalasia, his esophagus was blocked, nothing he ate or drank would pass. Even water would come back up.
With a Heller myotomy + fundoplication surgery, we opened the blockage and also took precautions against reflux.
1 day and 1 week after surgery: swallowing comfortably, drinking water, no complaints at all.

For 15 years, she experienced food coming back up into her throat, burning, chest and back pain, and waking up at night because of her symptoms.
Following reflux surgery, the change began very early. Our patient reports that she was able to sleep comfortably on the very first night after surgery, with her burning sensation and nighttime symptoms gone.
At her one-week follow-up, she said:
“The regurgitation, burning, and discomfort are gone. I no longer have any symptoms at night.”
