Y'all loved this callaloo 😍🌱

After I shared my balanced plate of callaloo, boiled sweet potato and butter-roasted chicken, some of the top comments were:

"Now THAT is what callaloo is supposed to look like"

"That callaloo has a PhD"

“That callaloo looking real good! Where can I get the recipe?”
😄
I was rather flattered—but I also went back into the kitchen, documented the process and put together the recipe with a full nutrient analysis so you can make it at home too

Because apparently, the internet needed to know what was in that pot! 😂

And no, I didn't "healthify" it because each serving is low in fat and provides moderate fiber—even though it contains coconut milk (powder) and Maggi crab flavour

It's another reminder that our traditional Caribbean foods can absolutely be part of a nourishing, balanced way of eating

It's guava season 😍

And yes, I mean "guava season" in both senses of the phrase 👀

We often hear about imported fruits like kiwi 🥝 being packed with vitamins, minerals & fiber that support gut health & overall well-being

And that's great...but our local fruits ALSO bring a lot of nutrition to the table 🙌🏾

Guava is one of the richest sources of vitamin C

It's also high in dietary fiber 💩 & has benefits related to cholesterol management & liver health
(PMID: 35214879)

Let this serve as a reminder that you can eat local, stretch your dollar & support your health 🌱

This guava season is also a season of abundance - use what's available to you, Cultural Fam'

POV: you don’t need a salad at every meal to eat healthy 🥬🍠🍗

Sometimes, we get so caught up in what a “healthy plate” is SUPPOSED to look like that we overlook how our cultural foods ALREADY meet the mark

This cultural plate provides:
🥬 Callaloo — fibre, vitamins, minerals & plant-based goodness

🍠 Sweet potato — complex carbohydrates, fibre & nutrients

🍗 Chicken — protein to support fullness & satisfaction

Together, the callaloo + sweet potato provide about 10g of dietary fibre

❗This matters because most adults aren't getting the recommended 25–38g of fibre per day

Now, imagine that your 3 main meals provide 10g of fiber - you'd easily reach your daily target 😌

So the deeper conversation isn't, “where's the salad?”

But it is, "how can we get enough fibre using the foods we actually enjoy and eat?" 💛

Before you ditch your cultural foods 👉🏾 save this post, share it with someone who needs the reminder & follow for more cultural nutrition content 🙌🏾

FYI "Flour" = bread, bake, roti & other flour-based staples 🍞

Let this serve as your reminder that high-carb food like "flour" products aren't inherently unhealthy

What's key is that you manage your portion size & what you pair it with - aka balance 👌🏾

So instead of trying to cut out all flour products (unless medically indicated), ask yourself:

"How can I build a more balanced approach?"

Yes, even while trying to lose weight or lower your blood sugar levels 🌱

Share this information with someone who you know needs it ❤️

& let me know - what's your favorite "flour"? I love my homemade roast bake...& paratha roti 😄

Thank you to the Bon Air Police Youth Club for having me for their JAVA activities 🎉

I love when nutrition is added to the curriculum 😍

This was a group of youths ranging from 6 to 19 years of age, so I incorporated activities that would appeal to all:

🌱Go, Grow & Glow foods
🏃🏾‍♀️ Food relay
🍭 Sugar shock

Needless to say, this nutrition session wasn't a lecture (because children don't appreciate that)

It was active, practical, culturally relevant and FUN

Special thanks to WPC Robinson & Team for the opportunity to invest in the health of our youth 💛

Throwback to 10 years ago during my nutrition practicum at the St. George's general hospital in Grenada 😍😍

My journey towards becoming a dietitian included practicums in Trinidad 🇹🇹, Grenada 🇬🇩 & Barbados 🇧🇧 before I completed my dietetic internship in Baltimore 🇺🇸

I love this memory 🌱
