๐ŸŒฅ๏ธโ„๏ธ How Less Sunlight & Colder Weather Impact Mental Health โ„๏ธ๐ŸŒฅ๏ธ

As the days grow shorter and colder, many people notice changes in their mood and energy levels. Reduced sunlight and chilly weather can take a toll on mental health, leading to feelings of sadness, fatigue, or even depression. This seasonal shift is often known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the "winter blues."

Hereโ€™s how colder weather and less sunlight can affect mental health:

Reduced Sunlight = Lower Mood: Sunlight plays a crucial role in regulating mood by helping your body produce serotonin, the โ€œfeel-goodโ€ hormone.

Less sunlight can lead to a drop in serotonin levels, contributing to feelings of sadness or depression.

Disrupted Sleep Patterns: Less sunlight can also impact your bodyโ€™s internal clock, making it harder to fall asleep or stay awake, which can lead to fatigue and irritability.

Less Outdoor Activity: Cold weather often keeps people indoors, leading to less physical activity. Mindful movement is key to mental well-being, and without it, feelings of sluggishness or low mood can worsen.

Increased Loneliness: Winter months can lead to isolation, as people spend more time inside and away from social interactions, heightening feelings of loneliness or disconnection.

Hereโ€™s how to combat the winter blues:

๐ŸŒž Get Sunlight: Try to spend time outside during the day or sit near windows that let in natural light.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ Stay Active: Even a short walk or light exercise indoors can lift your mood.

๐Ÿ’ก Light Therapy: Light therapy boxes mimic sunlight and can help improve mood if you canโ€™t get enough natural light.

๐Ÿง˜ Prioritize Self-Care: Make time for things that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it's reading, yoga, or connecting with loved ones.

If the winter blues feel overwhelming or persistent, reach out for support. Your mental health matters year-round. ๐Ÿ’™

NO weight or body comments during holiday celebrations this year! Weโ€™ve all heard or maybe said comments like:

โ€œOh, wow you have gained weight.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™ve eaten too many holiday cookies this year.โ€
โ€œWhen are you finally gonna lose the weight?โ€
โ€œWow you look great, have you lost weight?โ€

Letโ€™s be real, comments like this divert us from focusing on connecting with each other and what is really happening in our lives. They can also be hurtful. Comments about somebody losing weight are also harmful because they imply the person was in a bigger body before and that was worse, this thinner body is better. They reinforce diet culture constructs that say thin is good or high value and fat is bad or lesser value.

You never know how somebody is feeling about their body or in their body. Lets focus on the experience of togetherness this holiday season.

๐ŸŒจ๏ธ๐Ÿ’™ Coping with Depression During the Holidays ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒจ๏ธ

The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of joy and celebration, but for many, it can be a season filled with loneliness, stress, and depression. If youโ€™re struggling, know that your feelings are valid, and you donโ€™t have to go through it alone.

Here are a few tips for managing holiday blues:

๐ŸŒŸ Set Realistic Expectations: Itโ€™s okay if the holidays donโ€™t look perfect or like everyone elseโ€™s. Focus on what feels right for you.
๐ŸŒŸ Reach Out: Even though it may be hard, staying connected with friends or family members can provide emotional support.
๐ŸŒŸTake Care of Yourself: Get enough sleep, eat nourishing food, and take time for activities that make you feel groundedโ€”whether it's going for a walk, reading, or meditating.
๐ŸŒŸ Limit Social Media: The highlight reels of othersโ€™ holiday celebrations can intensify feelings of inadequacy or loneliness. Itโ€™s okay to take a break.
๐ŸŒŸ Seek Professional Help: If your feelings are overwhelming or persistent, donโ€™t hesitate to reach out to a therapist or a support line. Asking for help is a sign of strength ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒŸ Dealing with Food Guilt ๐ŸŒŸ

Feeling guilty for not finishing all your food, even when you're not hungry anymore ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜”?

It's okay to leave food on your plate. Whether it's because your appetite changed, you're full, or you simply didn't enjoy the meal as much as you thought you would, it's important to listen to your body's signals. ๐Ÿ’ฌโค๏ธ

Feeling guilty about leaving food is understandable. Food guilt can often come from:

๐Ÿ›’Being reminded of those who may not have enough to eat

๐Ÿ›’Having been raised with the 'finish everything on your plateโ€™ rule

๐Ÿ›’When the food somebody eats mediates their mood or comfortability sitting in their bodies

๐Ÿ›’It is a food that somebody is rarely โ€œallowedโ€ by themselves or parents

๐Ÿ›’Food scarcity or a home with a fear of food scarcity potentially 1st or 2nd generation immigrant families an/or families in low ses

However, forcing yourself to eat past fullness isn't the solution.
Some practical, creative ideas might be to consider saving leftovers for later or finding creative ways to repurpose them ๐Ÿ”„๐Ÿฒ

๐Ÿ—ฏ๏ธFor some, these feelings are more complex and require being open to explore new ways of coping, and uncover the beliefs linking your worth to how much food you do or donโ€™t eat.

๐Ÿ‘‡Share any other reasons you experience or ones you hear of that contribute to food guilt

If you or somebody you know is struggling with food guilt, consider seeking professional support. I am reachable at https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/danielle-pomilla-agoura-hills-ca/746638

๐ŸŒŸ Let's Talk About Mental Health ๐ŸŒŸ

Today, I want to open up a conversation about something that's incredibly important but often overlooked: mental health. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ฌ

It's okay not to be okay. We all have our ups and downs, moments of strength, and moments of struggle. But it's vital that we create a space where talking about our mental health isn't taboo, but encouraged and supported. ๐Ÿ’–

Remember, you are not alone. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, or any other mental health challenge, there are people who care about you and resources available to help. Don't hesitate to reach out and seek support. ๐Ÿค

Let's prioritize our mental well-being, break the stigma, and foster a culture of understanding and compassion. Together, we can make a difference. ๐Ÿ’ช
