Blood sugar deserves attention. But another part of your health deserves to stay on the radar: your blood vessels. 💙

Diabetes can damage blood vessels over time and increase the risk of circulation problems. That's one reason regular checkups and good diabetes management matter.

A few things worth discussing with your healthcare team:

🔴 How well your blood sugar is being managed
🔴 Whether you have any changes in sensation, skin color, or temperature in your feet
🔴 Any sores or wounds that are slow to heal
🔴 Whether you need additional foot or circulation checks
If you have diabetes, don't wait for a problem to become painful before bringing a change to your provider's attention.

Small conversations can be an important part of looking after your long-term health.

Beach walks. Farmers markets. A stroll around the neighborhood. Getting out and about is part of what makes life in Hawaiʻi special. 🌺

So if leg pain repeatedly shows up when you walk and improves when you stop, it may be more than an inconvenience.

One possible cause is peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs.

Leg pain can have many causes, and not everyone with PAD experiences obvious symptoms. If you notice a recurring pattern, talk with your healthcare provider about whether a vascular evaluation is appropriate.

Keep making room for the things you love. Don't ignore changes that make them harder to enjoy.

Before apps tracked your deliveries, your body already had a delivery system working around the clock. ❤️

Your blood vessels carry blood throughout your body, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues.

When blood flow is reduced, the effects depend on where the problem occurs. For example, narrowed arteries in the legs can cause pain with walking, while some circulation problems may be associated with wounds that are slow to heal.

Your vascular system does important work every day. Even when you don't think about it.

Curious about your circulation? Don't be afraid to ask questions at your next appointment.

Not every vascular condition comes with an obvious warning sign.

Some conditions develop gradually or without noticeable symptoms, so knowing your risk factors and staying up to date with appropriate healthcare can matter.

If you notice a change, such as persistent leg swelling, pain, changes in how your legs feel when walking, or other concerning symptoms, don't assume it's just part of getting older.

It's always okay to ask questions and talk with your healthcare provider about what you're experiencing.

How much do you know about your vascular health? Drop a question below. We may answer it in a future post.

For generations, the ocean has shaped life, connection, and movement in Hawaiʻi.

The recent Molokaʻi Hoe, one of Hawaiʻi's signature outrigger canoe races, brings that spirit to life each October as paddlers take on the challenging crossing from Molokaʻi to Oʻahu.

You don't have to be an athlete or paddle across the channel to appreciate what movement means to our health.

Our bodies are built to move, and circulation plays an important role in supporting that movement.

If you've noticed walking or physical activity has become more difficult, or you're experiencing recurring leg pain or discomfort, don't assume it's just part of getting older. It's worth talking with your healthcare provider.

Take care of the body that carries you through the life you love 🌺

Work. Travel. Meetings. Screen time.

Some days, we spend more time sitting than we realize.

Building short movement breaks into your day is a simple way to stay active. Stand up, stretch, take a short walk, or simply change positions throughout the day.

And if you're traveling, don't forget to give yourself opportunities to move when it's practical and safe to do so.

Small movement breaks can become part of a healthier routine.

We all have days when our legs feel tired.

But there's a difference between everyday fatigue and a new or concerning change.

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, can involve symptoms such as swelling, pain or tenderness, warmth, or changes in skin color.

Symptoms can vary, so it's important not to diagnose yourself based on a social media post.

If you're concerned about a new or persistent symptom, seek medical advice.

And if you experience sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing, seek emergency medical care.
