Some of the hardest conversations to have with our parents are also some of the most important 🤍

Talking about safety at home, future care, or what happens if their health changes can feel uncomfortable. But I’ve worked with so many families who wish they had started these conversations before a fall or hospitalization.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes you just need to start the conversation.

I’m sharing a few ways to make that feel a little easier in this blog:

Talking about aging, safety, or future care with someone you love is hard. It can feel uncomfortable, emotional, and even a little scary. But avoiding these conversations doesn’t protect our loved ones — it puts them at risk. At Balanced Living OT, we often step in after a crisis — after a fal...

Wanting to stay in your own home as you get older is a pretty reasonable thing to want.

And you don’t necessarily need to wait until something happens to start thinking about it.

Sometimes making a few changes before you need them can help your home keep working for you as your needs change.

If staying safely and comfortably in your own home is important to you or someone you love, we’d be happy to talk through what that could look like 🤍

Our Home Safety Evaluations are a great place to start:

Things that are actually spooky as an occupational therapist:

Your towel rack doubling as a grab bar
Walking through a dark house at 2 AM to use the bathroom
That rug you’ve tripped over approximately 47 times but refuse to move

Consider this your friendly reminder that spooky season is for haunted houses, not for feeling nervous in your own home! 👻

There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline for stroke recovery!

The first few months are often when we see the most rapid changes, thanks in part to increased neuroplasticity. But hitting the 6-month or 1-year mark does not mean you’ve reached the end of what’s possible.

Recovery can continue for years, and the timeline can look very different depending on the stroke, the areas of the brain affected, the person’s overall health, and their rehabilitation.

So if progress feels slower than it did at the beginning, that doesn’t necessarily mean progress is over. Sometimes the wins just start looking different.

At Balanced Living, we help people recovering from strokes and traumatic brain injuries work toward the things that matter in their everyday lives, from getting dressed and moving safely around the home to getting back to routines and activities they care about. 🤍

If you or someone you know recently experienced a stroke or traumatic brain injury, reach out to Balanced Living. We’d love to talk about how occupational therapy can support their recovery.

You don’t have to know exactly what kind of therapy you need before you call us.

You can tell us, “My mom is having a harder time at home, and we don’t really know what to do next.”

That’s enough to start the conversation. We’ll help you figure out what comes next!
