A major study has revealed that the human brain is actually two separate organs fused together.

For centuries, science has treated the human brain as a single, unified organ that grows from a single pool of early cells. However, researchers at Stanford Medicine have completely upended this textbook definition.

Published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, their study shows that what we call the brain is actually two ancient, independent nervous systems assembled side by side over evolutionary history.

By analyzing mouse embryos, the team discovered that the forebrain and midbrain—which govern reasoning, language, and consciousness—develop from an entirely different set of progenitor cells than the hindbrain, which controls vital autonomic functions like heartbeat, breathing, and swallowing.

This biological separation explains why scientists have struggled for decades to grow specific types of brainstem cells in laboratories, as they were trying to coerce forebrain cells into hindbrain functions.

Armed with this new blueprint, the Stanford team successfully guided human stem cells to become fully functional hindbrain motor neurons in a petri dish. This breakthrough provides a critical experimental platform for studying devastating neurodegenerative disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy, where the degeneration of these specific neurons robs patients of the ability to breathe and swallow.

Things that I have learned over decades teaching, being a practitioner, and doing my own personal work: ( #2)

The Anti-Guru and the Guru are opposite sides of the same coin.

We need good-faith criticism of individuals, modalities, and institutions. Being willing to look at what works and what does not propels our culture forward.

There is also a need to point out harm and abuses that are rife in any field that deals with power and authority; spiritual teaching is certainly no exception.

But it is easy for someone to make their entire identity (or career) out of disliking or dismissing others.

When someone does this, their view of the “other” flattens: it moves beyond something to critique into something to be dehumanized, mocked, or dismissed entirely.

When this “othering” becomes the bulk of a personality, or the crux of someone’s professional career (they have no other thoughts than pointing out the flaws or contempt of the other), there becomes a question of what the person has to offer other than denigration.

The question then becomes: What do they stand for, rather than what do they stand against?

It is also very typical that the anti-guru is pointing out an aspect of their own denied humanity. Their dislike of, or lack of ownership of, these parts of themselves plays out in the need to keep pointing to them in the outer world.

They are at war with themselves; they project their disowned parts onto another.

The tendency to point to the outer “badness” is also a way that we attempt to keep such badness away from ourselves.

Put more simply, someone pointing to a flaw––or even atrocious behavior––of another means that the “other” is bad, and therefore they are “good”.

We do this all the time, attempting to put our unowned darkness onto another.

Often, we dismiss others because their ideas challenge our sense of self. It is a defense against change.

Whatever the reason, it is worth considering the intention and motivations behind the anti-gurus you see around you.

Our world is in desperate need of more creators––those who build, inspire, and uplift.

The world needs more creators—those who dare to build, to inspire, and to uplift.

So many of my clients have experienced medical gaslighting.

🔥 Just published: A new paper by Dr. Blitshteyn and Dr. Grubb in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research where the authors emphasized, based on their experience and expertise, that distress in patients with POTS are driven predominantly by ineffective healthcare and not patients' attitude. This paper was in response to a UK study that suggested that patients with POTS need to be treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy because they were distressed. As a counterpoint to the study's conclusion, Dr. Blitshteyn and Dr. Grubb argued that there is a great need to treat patients with POTS with medications targeted to reduce autonomic symptoms, which then results in reduced disability and distress.
