At Some Point, We Have to Decide to Change the CourseI've lived with Type 2 diabetes for 39 years.
And one thing I've learned is that there are times during those years when we have to make a decision.
Not simply a decision to eat a little better tomorrow.
Not a decision to exercise more because our latest blood work wasn't quite what we hoped it would be.
Something deeper.
We decide that it's time to change the course of our Type 2.
That decision may come after a disappointing A1C.
It may come when our doctor tells us something has changed.
It may happen as we get older and realize that the system that worked for us at 45 isn't necessarily enough at 65 or 75.
Or perhaps nothing dramatic happens at all.
We simply recognize that we want to take better care of ourselves.
Most of us already know what we're supposed to do
Eat a healthy diet.
Move our bodies.
Get enough sleep.
Manage stress.
Take appropriate medications.
Pay attention to our blood work and work with our doctors.
After years with Type 2, very few of us need someone to tell us that these things matter.
And yet knowing and doing are very different things.
That's one of the reasons I've come to think differently about my role as a Type 2 coach.
My job isn't simply to give you more information.
There's already plenty of information.
My job is sometimes to slow you down.
To help you look at your patterns.
To help you understand why something may be happening rather than judging yourself because it happened.
To educate you when you need information.
To support you when something is difficult.
To remind you of things you may already know—but aren't consistently doing.
And then to help you make a pivot when something isn't working.
But there's something that has to come before all of that
You have to make the decision.
A coach can't make that decision for you.
Your doctor can't make it for you.
Your spouse or children can't make it for you.
At some point, you have to decide that staying healthy with Type 2 matters enough to become part of the way you live your life.
I don't mean that Type 2 should become the purpose of your life.
Quite the opposite.
Your purpose may be your family.
It may be your work.
It may be traveling, creating, helping other people, enjoying your grandchildren—or simply enjoying the life you've worked so hard to build.
But if you're living with Type 2, staying healthy enough to continue doing the things that give your life meaning can become a purpose of its own.
And something interesting can happen when you make that decision.
You begin turning an intention into reality.
You begin noticing patterns you previously ignored.
You make a different choice—not every time, but more often.
You recover more quickly when you get off track.
You stop looking for perfection and learn how to self-correct.
And gradually, you begin seeing yourself differently.
That's where coaching should eventually lead
I don't want someone to need me forever.
I want to help someone reach the point where they can say:
I understand my Type 2.
I understand my patterns.
I know the foundations that keep me healthy.
I recognize when something has changed.
And I know how to make a pivot.
In other words, my job is to help you become your own coach.
That doesn't mean doing everything alone.
We still need doctors. We still need good medical care and accurate information. And I believe there can be enormous value in learning with and getting support from other people who understand what living with Type 2 is actually like.
Being your own coach means you become an active participant in your health rather than simply reacting to the next blood test.
And there's another reward.
When you've made that decision—and begin seeing that you're capable of following through on it—the accomplishment itself can add something to your life.
Confidence.
Agency.
And yes, even a sense of purpose.
Not because Type 2 has taken over your life.
Because you've decided it won't.
That's a lot of what my upcoming free Type 2 Pivot Session is about: understanding where you are today, recognizing what may need to change, and beginning to build a system that fits the life you're actually living now.
If you've been thinking that something needs to change, perhaps this is a good time to make that decision.
