Ahead of pride month, we continue to educate ourselves on the needs of our kids who identify as LGBTQIA+ so we can best serve them and their families 🌈 #pride #bergencounty #therapyisaworkofheart #ramseypride

I’ve been thinking a lot about how parents try to save their kids from pain. All kinds of pain. It’s one of the most difficult parts of the job as a family therapist, to help a mother realize that letting her teen fail, or fall, or get scraped up (IRL or metaphorically speaking) is incredibly challenging when parents are hard wired to protect. It takes a lot of re-learning to understand that letting kids get through things is a gift that fosters resilience. Now more than ever, parents are faced with a situation they don’t know how to fix (and can’t!) during this pandemic, and so a lot of parents are seeing for the first time that they are uncomfortable and unsure about how to let their children experience pain while validating their experiences (without fixing), especially when they are feeling some of that pain too. It’s also forcing them to learn that sometimes we can’t and shouldn’t fix- because feelings aren’t for fixing - we should just bare witness and encourage our children to do what they can to work through difficult emotions. To try. To feel. To find their inner strength and the things that recharge them when they need them. Those are skills they’ll need beyond this moment in time, and we can begin to teach those now by modeling that ourselves. #thoughtsfromthecouch #therapistsofinstagram #bergenmama

New Years resolution: more communication. 🗣
Do your kids struggle to pick up on the nuances in a text? Can they read between the lines, make inferences and gauge sarcasm? Has this ever gotten in the way of their social success? They’re not alone. A huge piece of counseling we do here is helping teens navigate social media, texting and the digital world. Let’s face it - everything they do is online now - so it’s our job as parents, therapists and educators to help them learn the tools and strategies to navigate it effectively 📱
