'I Just Feel Like Myself': A Nonbinary Child And Their Family Explore Identity

Did you know that the research tells us kids start to identify with their gender around 3-4 years old? Sexuality begins to develop between 8 and 9 years old. Sex, gender and sexuality are all different things, too. Listening to kids (and teens, and adults) and helping them navigate their experiences as they try to learn who they are is a powerful gift we can give them as parents, educators, friends and allies 🌈

Three years ago, a 6-year-old child said to their parents, "I'm a boy-girl." Their parents explain their efforts to protect and empower their child.

Growing Up Alongside a Sibling With a Disability

In recognition of National Sibling Day, we wanted to share this old yes still very relevant article! We are immensely grateful to serve families, especially siblings and parents of children with disabilities, because two of our therapists come from a neurodiverse family, too. Supporting siblings and parents is incredibly meaningful to us and led to an increased empathy and desire to support family systems when a child or teen within that system has a diagnosis that impacts all. The story can be so different with the right guidance and support. ❤️

When children help with the education of a brother or sister with special needs, the outcomes are often good for both.

There is such understated value in showing up. Mothers show up every day for their kids, and there really are no days off. But what about when #motherhood gets so heavy to carry, or the weight of a #newborn or the #loss of a baby happens? Many mothers silently carry these burdens, feeling alone.

You absolutely do not need and SHOULD NOT suffer alone, in silence, or out of shame.

At @aworkofheart_counseling did you know we have an amazing perinatal mental health specialist,
Erin Smith, LCSW, who has been working with expectant moms, new moms, struggling moms, hoping to be moms, and distressed parents for years? And in this time of isolation, as we're still navigating towards hope and a return to normalcy, she is accepting new clients NOW! Minimal waiting for that appointment, so that she can show up in your life.

So what do you have to lose? Reach out to her at [email protected] ❤️

When was the last time you were truly #present? Take 5 min from your day and notice the moment. Label 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. Notice how it allows you the space you need to distance yourself between you and your thoughts. 💭

Grief is so raw, and it feels like we never can find the right words, exactly, to say to someone who is grieving. That's probably because there are no words to replace their loved one, ease their loss or their ache. I believe this is because we are not supposed to replace the ache - we are to acknowledge it...sit with them in it...observe and listen to it...be still, supportive and take our cues from the person who has no escape from their ache at this moment. This is equally true in cases of #infantloss and #miscarriage where the loss can feel more ambiguous, disenfranchised, or lonely. Know that you are not alone, and you deserve to be seen, all of you, including your #ache

Are you a people pleaser? So many of us are - and if you have a great deal of #anxiety it can really amplify the self doubt, guilt or shame you experience if you #disappoint someone or set a #boundary with them. This can be hard, so it's important to remind yourself of the #why behind why you are setting that boundary, why it's ok to say no, or why you simply cannot please everyone. Hope these mantras help you this weekend ❤️

During the end of my time having an #MSWintern this year, I received the most kind gift from her. This sign (that was decidedly placed next to sadness, anger and disgust in my office) was the thing that stuck with her the most, as I guess I said it often. While I didn't create this mantra (thanks @glennondoyle for your wisdom ❤️) I echoed it often to the kids I worked with in front of my student, and she too began to hear this message and apply it to her own anxieties as a rising #socialworker. The thing I love about this idea though is that sometimes when it feels really hard it's because we're doing it right. Feeling. Loving. Parenting. Practicing. Forgiving. Living. It's all hard. But man is it worth it 🙌

A lot of #parents are worried about their kids experiencing failures, but sometimes we have to fall to learn the most. In fact, recognizing that you can get back up (and you're supported in doing so) is one of the healthiest lessons you can bestow, leading to #resiliency and #success down the line!
.

This is a time when so many kids are struggling - which is why therapy can be a place for them to "fall" and learn how to pick up the pieces and move forward. This process must be guided or taught often, especially for those who haven't yet experienced a significant, adverse life changing experience. That also doesn't mean starting therapy means your child is failing - it means they're ready to start thriving despite all that's being thrown at them! #therapyisaworkofheart #fosterstrength #bergencountynj #allendalenj #ridgewoodnj #glenrocknj #waldwicknj #hohokusnj #saddlerivernj #ramseynj #mahwahnj #wyckoffnj #oaklandnj #franklinlakesnj #paramusnj

✨Meet Angela Buck, LCSW✨
Angela is taking on new clients at the practice and works with children, teens and young adults. Some particular areas of specialization include trauma focused CBT and grief counseling. Welcome, Angela! ❤️
Hi! My name is Angela and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I am a graduate of New York University’s Silver School of Social Work with my Masters of Social Work, and I have also completed a certification in Trauma-Focused CBT. I continue to explore new research and evidence to better assist those I work with.

As a clinician, I truly believe that each and every person is unique and worthy of therapy that matches their own individual needs. Life can become complex and difficult- whether planned or unplanned, and I am committed to guiding you through these times with a humanistic, strengths based, and solutions focused approach. Therapy at times may seem daunting and scary, but my goal is to create a safe and comfortable space to make any difficulties become a bit lighter to hold.

I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with vastly different diagnoses and problem areas including but not limited to anxiety, ADHD, depression, self-esteem, trauma, child behavioral management, parent coaching, stress management, and grief counseling. I have also worked as an Intensive In-Community Therapist working with both children and their parent/guardians, in addition to my work with populations in children and adult outpatient settings.

Motherhood is overwhelming...during a pandemic a lot of moms have beat themselves up about their mothering from how the kids are managing distance learning, what they are eating, how much socialization they're getting or how down time is spent. There's a lot #shame and #guilt for mamas and that can lead to a lot of difficult emotions and difficult thought patterns.
If you or your kids are finding you're struggling more than ever, help is out there!

I'd like to share a rather unusual and free aces prevention resource...parenting tips bumper stickers! Advancing Parenting, a Camarillo, CA nonprofit, produces parenting tips bumper stickers and makes them available at no cost to businesses, organizations, clinics, schools, and individuals. There are fifty-one in a set and each bumper sticker communicates a parenting behavior or practice generally recognized as supporting the healthy development of children. Just one will be read thousands of times! Bumper stickers are a unique and powerful way to educate everyone about parenting and prevent child abuse five, ten, twenty, fifty years down the road. At stoplights drivers and passengers point, smile, and nod. Conversations begin and often a phone is used to take a photo of the sticker right at the stoplight. Presumably, they are being shared on social media. It's wonderful to see! Sets of the stickers can be put in holders and placed on counters and tables so folks can select one or more for their cars. Visit www.advancingparenting.org to order this free resource. Use a computer...our website is not optimized for phones. Please share.
