Luke's Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency is an American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) accredited post graduate program. The dual cohort (January and July) year long program is designed to enhance orthopaedic physical therapy clinical practice through academic coursework, one on one mentoring time, and interprofessional collaboration. We strive to create leaders in the field and deliver the highest quality, patient-centered care to help patients live more productive lives and be the provider of choice in the communities we serve.

Pictured here is Megan Yourey, OPTA student, treating a patient with medial epicondylitis, commonly known as golfer’s elbow, using shockwave therapy. This is a noninvasive treatment that uses a handheld device to deliver acoustic waves to the affected area. Evidence-based research has supported that the waves stimulate the tissue to help reduce pain and reignite the body’s healing response.

Based on evidence-based treatments for exercise prescription, Megan Yourey, OPTA student, applies this knowledge to her patient’s treatments. The BOSU ball is a great tool for challenging balance, ankle stability, and proprioception. The unstable surface helps strengthen the muscles surrounding the ankle while improving control and coordination. Pictured here is Megan, working with a patient with chronic ankle instability to improve her neuromuscular control.

Pictured here, Megan Yourey, OPTA student is working with her patient, Jazmine, who underwent an ACL reconstruction about 7 months ago. Jazmine is a softball player for her college team and Megan has been incorporating hip and lower extremity strengthening aside of plyometrics and agility drills to safely return her to sport. With the use of evidence-based research from the OPTA Program, Megan is able to apply her skills within the clinic to address strength deficits and functional limitations.

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training is a tool to help patients build strength without needing heavy weights. This can be especially helpful after surgery, injury, or during the early stages of rehab when heavier resistance may not yet be appropriate. Pictured is OPTA student, Megan Yourey, using BFR to challenge the quadriceps with a lighter load. Megan has learned through evidence-based research that BFR increases a muscle’s training stimulus, helping to promote strength and muscle growth while working within the patient’s current limitations.

During this week’s Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency mentoring session, Tyler O’Steen, DPT, and his mentor, Frank Buzin, DPT, FAAOMPT, reviewed a meta-analysis examining evidence-based interventions for the treatment of cervicogenic headaches. This discussion was prompted by a new patient they evaluated collaboratively during their weekly mentoring session. Following the literature review, Tyler successfully applied the evidence-based interventions to his patient’s plan of care, demonstrating the value of integrating clinical mentorship, research, and patient-centered care.

Our Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residents recently wrapped up a quarter focused on the craniomandibular region, thoracic spine and ribs, and cervical spine.

Pictured is Orthopedic Resident, Alnisa Alston, DPT, performing a seated cervicothoracic junction (CTJ) manipulation. This high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) manual therapy technique can be used to improve mobility and reduce pain in the lower neck and upper back.
