Here are five facts about Autism:
1. Spectrum Disorder: Autism is a spectrum, meaning it affects individuals in different ways and to varying degrees. Some may have significant challenges, while others may have only mild difficulties.
2. Communication Challenges: Many individuals with autism experience difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, including challenges in understanding social cues, making eye contact, or using language appropriately.
3. Repetitive Behaviors: A common feature of autism is the presence of repetitive behaviors, such as hand-flapping, rocking, or insistence on routines and sameness.
4. Sensory Sensitivities: People with autism may have heightened or reduced sensitivity to sensory stimuli, like lights, sounds, textures, or smells, which can cause discomfort or distress.
5. Early Diagnosis: Autism can often be diagnosed as early as age 2, though signs may appear earlier or later. Early intervention is key to improving outcomes for those on the spectrum.

Sensory regulation refers to the ability to manage and respond appropriately to sensory input from the environment and one’s own body. It involves processing sensory information—such as touch, sound, movement, and visual stimuli—in a way that allows for focus, emotional control, and appropriate reactions.

For some individuals, especially those with sensory processing differences (such as people with autism or sensory processing disorder), sensory regulation can be challenging. They may be overly sensitive (hypersensitive) or under-responsive (hyposensitive) to sensory input, which can lead to feelings of overwhelm, discomfort, or difficulty engaging in daily activities.

Strategies for sensory regulation may include deep breathing, movement activities, fidget tools, weighted blankets, or structured routines to help maintain an optimal state of alertness and comfort.
