“I thought I was doing better”
“I feel like I’m back at square one”
Statements often heard in therapy sessions.
Self-growth is HARD. I often compare personal growth to treating a physical wound that won’t heal. If the wound is not healing, it risks infection; that infection can lead to far worse things. To treat the infection may involve a very painful debriding – removing dead or infectious tissue, using a powerful antiseptic to clean the wound and monitoring to allow for proper healing.
When you start therapy, you may be opening old wounds – some that started generations before you. You don’t go back to square one, and you will make progress; however, the work can be tough. The payoff? A healed wound and a skill set that allows you to handle challenging situations down the road.
