“Just crack a window” is one of the most common pieces of advice for bad indoor air —
and one of the most misunderstood.
Opening a window doesn’t automatically fix air quality.
Why?
Because indoor air problems are usually tied to airflow patterns, pressure, and circulation — not just whether outside air is present.
In some cases, cracking a window can:
• pull pollutants into the space
• create uneven airflow
• leave stagnant air untouched
This isn’t about doing nothing — it’s about doing the right thing.
Fresh air matters, but how air moves matters more.
Myths are easy. Understanding is better.
Have you been told to “just open a window” before?
