When clinicians talk about autonomic regulation, we are not saying your symptoms exist because you need to calm down. Your autonomic nervous system is involved in constant behind-the-scenes adjustment. That is why “regulation” is a physiological conversation, not a character judgment.

When that system is struggling, normal things like standing, heat, eating, exertion or changing position may feel surprisingly demanding. The analogy isn’t perfect, but cruise control is a useful way to understand the idea: your body should be adjusting without requiring you to manually drive every function.

A new study looked at semaglutide, the medication used in Ozempic and Wegovy, in older female mice. The mice showed improvements in things like muscle function, memory, blood sugar control, and several markers linked with aging. In one group, the mice also lived longer.

Researchers also compared semaglutide with eating fewer calories, since the medication naturally reduces appetite.

Interestingly, some of the benefits seemed to go beyond simply eating less, which suggests GLP-1 medications may affect other pathways involved in aging.

It adds an interesting new question to the GLP-1 conversation, especially as we learn more about their effects beyond weight loss.

Coffee used to make you feel focused. Now it makes you shaky, anxious, wired, or like your heart is beating a little too fast.

A change in caffeine tolerance can sometimes be a clue that something else has shifted.

Poor sleep can make caffeine feel stronger. High stress can leave your nervous system more reactive. Perimenopause can change sleep, anxiety, and stimulant tolerance. And drinking coffee on an empty stomach may make blood sugar swings or jitteriness feel more noticeable.

If your body is suddenly reacting differently to caffeine, stress, food, or exercise, book a consultation with our team. We can help you look at what may have changed.

Your face looks fuller. Your rings are tighter. Your clothes feel different. And it happened after one particularly stressful week.

What you may be noticing is a temporary shift in fluid balance. During stressful periods, several things often change at once.

Sleep gets shorter or more fragmented. Meals may contain more sodium or refined carbohydrates. Movement drops. Alcohol intake may increase. Digestion can slow. Inflammatory signalling and stress physiology can also shift. Even carbohydrate intake matters. When your body stores more glycogen, it stores water alongside it. That alone can change how your body looks and feels from one day to the next.

Then there is the nervous system. A higher sympathetic, or “fight-or-flight,” load can influence circulation, digestion, sleep, and the hormonal systems involved in regulating fluid and electrolytes.
Cortisol is part of that conversation, but reducing every symptom to “high cortisol” is an oversimplification.

The body is dynamic. Fluid balance can shift quickly in response to your environment.

Perimenopause can change your cholesterol. So what can you actually DO about it?

Hormonal changes are part of this transition, but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless when it comes to supporting your long-term metabolic and cardiovascular health.

Here are 5 places to start:

🥗 Prioritize protein and fiber. Protein supports muscle, while fiber-rich foods can help support healthy cholesterol levels.

🥑 Take a closer look at saturated fat. Replacing some saturated fats with unsaturated fats from foods like olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, and fish may support a healthier lipid profile.

🏋️ Build and maintain muscle. Strength training supports muscle mass, insulin sensitivity, and metabolic health as you move through midlife.

😴 Protect your sleep. Poor sleep can influence blood sugar, appetite, stress hormones, and other factors connected to cardiometabolic health.

🌿 Make room for recovery. Chronic stress can affect sleep, eating patterns, blood sugar regulation, and your ability to stay consistent with healthy habits.
