Alaska IBEW The IBEW is among the world’s strongest labor organizations, representing workers in a range of skilled occupations in a wide variety of fields.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was founded in St. Louis, Missouri on November 28, 1891. IBEW Local 1547 was chartered in Alaska on October 1, 1946, assuming the jurisdiction of IBEW work in Alaska from Local 46 in Seattle, and continues to advocate for safety and protection of the rights of electrical and communications workers, as well as local government employees, health care industry employees, and many more non-construction occupations. Local 1547 represents workers in many diverse construction classifications including power linemen, inside wiremen, power plant workers and technicians, mechanics, warehouse workers, line clearance tree trimmers and heavy equipment operators. Classifications in communications include telephone linemen, installation and repair workers, telephone operators, central office technicians, cable maintenance workers, and fiber optic specialists, just to name a few. We also take pride in knowing that our efforts in strengthening safety and worker rights benefit many other workers in our state, not just those we represent. Traditionally, people think of IBEW members as people who work with electricity—but over the years, other classifications have joined the ranks of Local 1547. Some of the many classifications we represent are: cooks, certified nursing assistants, clerks, accounting specialists, engineers, city and municipal employees, property management workers, maintenance custodians, gardeners, librarians, plant services workers, programmers, radar operators, cashiers and x-ray technicians. With close to 5000 members, IBEW Local 1547 is, we believe, one of the strongest unions in the state of Alaska.

It's not only about the money. It never was.

When workers raise concerns about how they're treated, how decisions are made, and whether their voices matter, offering a little more money doesn't make those concerns disappear.

GCI employees have raised issues that go far beyond their paychecks. Reducing those concerns to a dollar amount misses the point entirely.

The question isn't just how much GCI is willing to pay. It's whether management is willing to address why employees started speaking up in the first place.

A lot has changed in the trade, including how we climb.

Did you know OSHA didn't generally require qualified linemen to use fall protection while climbing poles until 2015?

This photo gives us a glimpse of the equipment and techniques used by an earlier generation of Alaska's electrical workers.

Yes, we noticed: one of these linemen isn't wearing a hard hat. Safety standards have come a long way. Please don't try this at home (or on the job).

Now we need your help! Do you recognize either of these linemen? Any idea when or where this was taken?

And for our longtime members, what's the biggest change you've seen in climbing equipment over your career?

⚡ Educating Our Educators. Powering Alaska's Future. ⚡

Career and Technical Education educators from across Alaska gathered in Anchorage last week for the annual ACTE Conference. IBEW Local 1547 was proud to welcome them to the Tom Cashen Electrical Apprenticeship School for an IBEW hosted pre-session workshop.

These dedicated educators learned firsthand about the incredible opportunities available through apprenticeship and the pathways that lead to rewarding, high-demand careers in the electrical industry. By educating our educators, we help ensure that students across the state are exposed to career options they may never have been exposed to.

The future of Alaska's workforce starts in the classroom.

When educators understand the value of apprenticeship, they can inspire the next generation to build successful careers, strengthen their communities, and power Alaska's future.
