October is National Physical Therapy month, and I have decided to highlight a few patient success stories to demonstrate ways that working on your health and wellness can be rewarding.

Angelica attended PT a while ago for her hip after a labral tear diagnosis. She was able to find relief, get back to running, but ultimately decided to have surgery to reduce future limitations she may have. Sometimes physical therapy can provide relief but may not be the only treatment or long term solution. She went into her procedure strong and has been doing well afterwards!

Oscar has come to the clinic for a few reasons over the past 2 years- being a growing male athlete, he has been working on his muscle tone and flexibility, to prevent future injuries. He has also shadowed me over the summer, as he is interested in a career in PT. Seeing a family be so proactive and work hard on their rehab has been inspiring, as I don't think I prioritized taking care of my body as a high school student. It's never too early (or too late) to utilize the resources available and maximize your health and performance.

Margie had a severe ankle injury, resulting in multiple screws and plates to secure her joint. She attended physical therapy from the beginning and always followed through on my recommended treatments. She did have a few setbacks with sensitivity to the incision, then nerve pain globally while reducing her pain meds. She always communicated these with me and we made adjustments to her plan. She stayed motivated to get back to her prior level of mobility, and always told me about her goals to play with her grandkids. She brought them to a session and it was obvious how much playing with them meant to her. She was eventually able to reach her goals and hearing about those milestones made me happy for how far she had come. Once you find your why, it is often much easier to stay motivated and Margie is a prime example of that.

Second is Ainsley. She is on high school and competitive dance teams, and was unable to dance with her teams for a few months due to a back condition. She was limited in lifting and mobility, to avoid putting strain on her back into extension. This is the main position she is used to being in for dance, and anything with speed/power was more symptomatic. She persevered through the monotonous weeks of rehab and was studying the routines to get back as soon as she was released to do so. She is the true definition of a student of her sport, staying committed to the long term goals she has for years to come!

First up is Tim, who has been a patient for a few different injuries/aches and pains over the years. He is always very eager to learn about his body and work on prevention as well as progressing his fitness on his running journey. Due to a complex medical issue he is no longer medically cleared to run marathons, so he has been challenging himself with 1/2 marathons, trail races, and relays across Iowa. His perseverance is very inspiring, and motivates me to stay active and not take my running ability for granted! Cheering him on in local races has been very fun and rewarding :)

PSA for Chiropractors and other medical professionals to stop listings they “do physical therapy” on their websites. That is not a service, it is a profession and can only be provided by a licensed physical therapist! Thanks :)

Patients who say “running is bad for you”. 🙃 I know it isn’t for everyone but tell that to the people racing fast well into their 60’s 🤯

Lifestyle and genetics definitely have an impact and I hope to be running when I’m my Dad’s age! No joint replacements for him- and I know so many believe distance running will cause “wear and tear” but there are many in South Korea for World Masters Track and Field that prove that is incorrect :)

Cheer him on for his final two races!! Chris Deighan

Let's change the terminology from "bone on bone" to the "grey hair of the joint" 😂

In all honesty it is frustrating to hear these terms used as it promotes fear and is not accurate. Many people have pain from other structures and the pain relief can be great with exercise as the main and first line intervention.
