💙💛Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month!💛💙

As we close out October, we are reminded that this month, and year round, we celebrate the abilities, achievements, and individuality of people with Down Syndrome.

Together, let’s spread awareness, embrace differences, and promote a world where everyone feels valued and included! ✨

Pictured is one of our amazing clients, Blake, and his mama who all month, celebrate and spread awareness for the National Down Syndrome Society, by wearing their blue and yellow! Blake is one of our long-running clients in Annapolis and we’re so lucky we get to see him for speech-language therapy!

Thank you National Down Syndrome Society for providing the facts! Check out their page and website for more info ℹ️

Meet the amazing leader of our clinical team, Clinical Director, Sophie Westfield, M.S. Ed., CCC-SLP!

Having lived in numerous places on the east coast, Sophie is originally from Woodbury, Connecticut and grew up in Georgia, before moving to Pittsburgh, PA which her family now call home. After attending university in New York state, we were lucky enough to have Sophie join our team over 5 years ago.

Her life’s theme song? 🎶 “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home” by Hannah Montana, of course! Outside of being a rockstar clinician, Sophie shows off her skill and passion for rowing (yes, she was a collegiate rower!) by coaching middle school, high school, collegiate, and masters rowing programs. Her four sisters and her have a running joke that one day they’re going to row a Westfield 4 with her dad as the coxswain! 🚣🏻‍♀️

Sophie’s favorite part about working at Chesapeake Speech Language Associates is getting to work alongside incredible families and therapists who continue to shape and inspire her growth as a clinician. Outside of her leadership role, she treats patients in the Annapolis and Stevensville offices.

Thank you for all that you do, Sophie! We’re so grateful for your dedication, leadership, and the care you bring to our team and patients every day. CSLA wouldn’t be the same without you! 💙

What is cue based feeding?

Cue based feeding focuses on an infant’s readiness and safety during feeding times, rather than just the volume consumed.

Our employee, Abigail, learned about cue-based feeding during her clinical training in the NICU. Its methodology is something she carries with her in all aspects of therapy, where she focuses on a child’s cues and lets them direct their speech sessions, rather than strictly focusing on intake or data.

Having concerns about your new born or infant’s feeding? Are you having issues with bottle feeding and/or breastfeeding? Give us a call! We’re here to help and have the experience to do so! 🤱🏽🍼

What is Gestalt Language Processing?

Some children learn language by first remembering and using whole phrases they’ve heard before, rather than starting with individual words. Over time, they begin breaking those phrases apart, combining words in new ways, and eventually create their own sentences.

Learn about the stages of Gestalt Language Development and what you might notice at each stage!

Remember: Each stage represents progress, and communication can look different for every child.

What is a speech-language pathologist (SLP)?

Buckle up…this is a long one! But boy does it break down what we do in a great way!

Speech-language pathologists work with people of all ages to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders (ASHA, 2026). While our therapist’s at Chesapeake Speech Language Associates specialize in pediatrics, SLPs support communication across the lifespans.

Take a look at the “BIG 9” core professional areas of treatment for speech-language pathologists.
