A few moments from a very brief yoga asana practice (10 minutes 😅) with my sweet boy.
We are still floating around in our postpartum bubble, and I haven’t had much opportunity for complex movement so this was a real treat- especially for my shoulders.
Although I don’t get on my mat as much as I used to, I practice yoga everyday and my newborn is truly the greatest teacher I’ve ever studied with.
This season of life is helping me understand 4 significant Yamas (guidelines for interacting with the external world), and Niyamas (guidelines for a balanced internal world).
1 - Bramacharya: wise use of vital energy. Everyday my energy goes to fulfilling the needs of my baby. In order to care for him I have to be diligent about getting as much sleep as I can, eating nutrient dense foods, and connecting to nature everyday.
2 - Aparigraha: non-possessiveness, letting go. In motherhood, I see this as letting go of things I want to do or things I want to have. This season of life is truly about giving, and being of service.
3 - Tapas: self discipline, vibrant dedication. There are certainly moments in the middle of the night when I don’t want to get up, but the moment I feel my son in need of anything I’m up and ready to take care of him. He’s on the top of my mind at all times.
4 - Isvara Prandihana: surrender to God/the great mystery. I’ve always loved contemplating the unknown, and going through the pregnancy and birth portal brought a renewed sense of wonder and awe into my heart. I feel like I have access to a whole new level of love, and I hope to share it with as many people as I can in this finite lifetime.
This practice can be a catalyst for great transformation in every season of life. The movement aspect of yoga is what drew me in, and the philosophical teachings of yoga continue to nourish my soul day after day after day ✨
