1️⃣ They drink a LOT more than you think — 5–10 gallons at rest, double that in heat or work.

2️⃣ “Clean-ish” isn’t clean enough — algae, dirt, and bugs aren’t just gross, they’re health risks.

3️⃣ Dehydration shows up fast — dull coat, low energy, even colic can trace back to water.

4️⃣ Horses are picky — too hot, too cold, or “off” smelling? They’ll refuse it.

5️⃣ Electrolytes aren’t optional — they keep every horse drinking and balanced, not just performance horses.

👉 Water is your horse’s #1 nutrient. Keep it fresh, keep it full, keep it flowing.

Metabolic horses need thoughtful nutrition. 🤔🐴

In this episode of Feed Room Chemist, we’re talking EMS, feeding considerations, and how diet can support horses with metabolic concerns.

If you’ve ever wondered what “low starch,” “low sugar,” or “NSC” really means in the feed room, this one is worth a listen.

Fall is a good time to get ahead of parasites. 🍂🐴

Parasite problems aren’t always obvious. Encysted larvae can contribute to diarrhea and that persistent “pot-belly” appearance, making this an important conversation to have with your veterinarian.

Keep an eye on:
🔹 Body condition and weight changes
🔹 Manure consistency and digestive changes
🔹 Your horse’s f***l egg count and individual deworming needs

A little attention now can help support healthy weight, digestion, and overall condition heading into winter.

Your horse’s box issues could be tied to nutrition.

When a horse gets anxious, fidgety or resistant in the box, training may not be the only factor.

🍬 Oats and sweet feeds are high in sugar and starch, which can lead to a quick release of glucose and increased excitability.

⏰ Going several hours without forage can leave the stomach exposed to acid and contribute to digestive discomfort.

🐴 Quick starts, hard stops and abrupt changes in direction can make an already painful digestive tract feel worse. Over time, a horse may begin to associate the box with that pain.

Providing forage throughout the day is a good place to start. Aim for around 2% of your horse’s body weight in hay each day, and use a slow feeder when pasture is not available.
