Cold & Flu Season Is Here — Here's How to Stay Healthy on Vacation
Every fall I start seeing the same thing in my clinic: people who had a wonderful trip planned, then got hit with a cold or flu right before — or worse, right during — their vacation.
As a physician AND a travel planner, I want you to go on that trip feeling your best. Here's what I tell my own patients before they travel:
💉 Get your flu shot before you go. Airports, theme parks, and cruise ships are high-traffic environments. A simple shot takes 10 minutes and can save your whole trip.
🧴 Hand hygiene is everything. Wash your hands often and carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer. Railings, elevator buttons, menus — they all get touched by hundreds of people a day.
😴 Protect your sleep. Travel disrupts your routine, and a tired immune system is an easy target. Build in downtime, especially on travel days.
💧 Stay hydrated. Flying and walking theme parks all day are dehydrating. Dehydration stresses your body and makes you more susceptible to illness. Carry a water bottle.
🎒 Pack a small health kit. I always recommend: pain reliever, antihistamine, antacid, nasal spray, and a few masks. You hope you don't need them. You'll be glad they're there.
🌡️ Know your limits. If you start feeling run down before your trip, listen to your body. Rest now so you can enjoy every single day of your vacation.
Your health is the foundation of every great trip. Let's make sure yours starts strong.
